Arrive at the Sanctuary after the loyalty route
Divine Dragon is at the Sanctuary in Fountainhead Palace. Reaching Fountainhead requires the non-Shura main route through Great Shinobi Owl and the required ingredients. Before entering, finish ending work that depends on dialogue or items before the Dragon if you are aiming for Purification or Return; Progression and Endings keeps those locks in route order. This battle is more about reading its arena than testing your ordinary sword damage.
The first part uses Old Dragons of the Tree. Do not treat every white dragon as a target. Move through the group, perform deathblows on the pale dragons when the prompt appears, and avoid the dark dragons’ attacks. Stay mobile instead of holding a single spot in the crowd. This clears the way to the main Divine Dragon sequence.
Grapple the lightning tree and send it back
Against Divine Dragon, watch for trees that become charged with lightning. Grapple to a charged tree, catch the lightning while airborne, and use the attack to send it into the Dragon. Ordinary sword swings are not the plan here. Each successful lightning strike advances the fight and creates the visual language for the next one.
The Dragon’s sword waves tell you exactly which movement to use. Jump the low horizontal wind slash. Sidestep or run laterally from a vertical slash, then keep moving until the next tree window. Do not stand under a tree merely hoping it will charge. Watch the effect, take the grapple prompt, and commit only after the route is clear.
| Arena event | Useful response |
|---|---|
| Pale Old Dragon is exposed | Take the deathblow and keep moving through the group. |
| Dark Old Dragon attacks | Avoid it; it is an obstruction, not the required kill. |
| Tree becomes lightning-charged | Grapple, receive the lightning in the air, then attack the Dragon. |
| Horizontal wind slash | Jump over it. |
| Vertical sword wave | Sidestep or run laterally, then look for the next charged tree. |
The fight is forgiving once its loop is understood, but rushing a charged tree can put you inside a sweep. Keep the camera high enough to see both the Dragon and the tree line. If you lose orientation, run to open space and wait for the next clear prompt instead of gambling on an off-screen grapple.
Survive the final barrage and finish the encounter
After several lightning reversals, the trees disappear. This is intentional: survive the Dragon’s prolonged barrage until trees return. During it, jump the horizontal blasts and sidestep or run sideways from the vertical strikes; do not wait for a tree that is not present. Once a charged tree reappears, grapple it, lock on, and return the final lightning. The Dragon falls forward after that hit. Run up the length of its sword to reach its face, then perform the required Shinobi Deathblow with the Mortal Blade. That final interaction is what awards Divine Dragon’s Tears and ends the fight.
Victory grants Divine Dragon’s Tears, the main ritual item used at the end of the game. It also moves Ashina into its later state, replacing some enemies and closing off parts of earlier-world cleanup. Take care of any route-sensitive conversations, Prayer Beads, and optional bosses you still want before treating the Dragon as a casual checkpoint. The next stretch returns you to Ashina and heads toward the ending you prepared.
