Sekiro Skills and Mikiri Counter Guide: First Points That Change Fights

On this page

Use Mikiri for a thrust, not every danger symbol

Mikiri Counter is an early skill with a broad payoff because it turns a thrust into a Posture opening. Lock onto the enemy, identify the forward weapon line, and step dodge toward it as the thrust lands. Do not press it only because the danger symbol appeared: the same symbol can mark a sweep or a grab.

Use the response that matches the move:

Perilous attack Practical response
Thrust Step forward for Mikiri, or deflect if that is the safer timing you know
Sweep Jump, then use the airborne follow-up if you have room
Grab Create space with a jump, sprint, or step dodge

Practise the three reads against Hanbei before relying on Mikiri in a boss string. A boss without a repeatable thrust does not make the skill bad; it means your next point may solve a more immediate problem.

Spend points on actions you will equip

Early Shinobi Arts that support movement, stealth, or recovery can help in every area. A Combat Art only helps once it is equipped, and some Combat Arts use Spirit Emblems. Check your current loadout after buying a skill instead of assuming it becomes active by itself.

Prosthetic Tools have the same rule. Give each Shinobi Tool to the Sculptor, fit the tools you plan to use, and keep Spirit Emblems available for the tool or art you actually intend to spend. A good skill choice supports a move you can reliably perform, rather than a long chain that leaves you open.

Open new trees when their text is available

Skill texts unlock their own trees. The Sculptor gives you the Prosthetic Esoteric Text after fitting three Prosthetic Tools. For Ashina Arts, speak with Tengu near Ashina Castle Gate after defeating Gyoubu, complete his rat-hunting request, and return for the text. If a tree is missing, progress or meet that prerequisite; it is not hidden in a different skill-menu tab.

When a new tree opens, read one branch from its first purchase to the next useful skill before spending. That reveals whether you are buying a required step toward a move you want or taking a detour you will not equip.

A reliable early loop

  1. Learn the basic deflection and Perilous responses with Hanbei.
  2. Buy Mikiri Counter once you can use it deliberately against thrusts.
  3. Choose one support skill for the problem you are repeatedly losing to.
  4. Add a Combat Art or Prosthetic skill only after fitting it into the current loadout.
  5. Save points when the next available option does not solve a real problem.

Death halves current sen and experience progress toward the next skill point, but banked skill points remain. Before a hard boss attempt, finish a point if you are close, spend it at an Idol, and then practise without turning every loss into lost progress.

Mikiri pairs naturally with the core Posture loop: attack or deflect to keep pressure on, then take the Deathblow when the opening appears. Use Deflection and Perilous Attacks for the visual reads, and Prosthetic Tools when a fitted tool supports a specific plan.
