About Ys X: Nordics
Young adventurer Adol Christin and Norman pirate Karja Balta become unlikely partners in the Obelia Gulf, where immortal Griegr threaten its people. Their voyage aboard the Sandras combines fast action combat, Mana-based exploration, sailing and ship battles as the pair investigate the gulf and confront its danger.
Ys X: Nordics follows a young Adol Christin on a voyage through the Obelia Gulf, a northern sea dotted with islands and inhabited by the seafaring Norman people. Adol and his companion Dogi are travelling toward Celceta when they encounter a Norman fleet and then reach the coastal town of Carnac. There, Adol meets Karja Balta, daughter of the Balta fleet's leader and a feared pirate in her own right. A sudden attack by the immortal Griegr, creatures that prey on people around the gulf, forces Adol and Karja to confront a threat neither can handle alone. The two become bound by Mana shackles and must cooperate, then escape Carnac aboard a ship as the Griegr assault the town. That ship, the Sandras, becomes their base and means of travel. The partnership between the curious young adventurer and the direct, battle-ready Karja anchors the story: they explore the gulf, learn why the Griegr are there and work with people whose lives have been disrupted by the attacks. The game places this episode early in Adol's life and frames the wider mystery through the people and islands encountered at sea.
On land, the pair explore towns, fields, caves and island routes, with Mana Actions serving both as traversal tools and ways to interact with the environment. Mana String lets a character pull toward distant footholds, cross gaps or draw closer to an enemy; at marked points, pulling can reveal a route. Mana Ride turns movement into a fast glide across water, marshes and currents that would otherwise block access. Mana Sense reveals enemies, mechanisms and buried objects normally hidden from view, and its enhanced form briefly slows time to help cross hazards such as closing doors or unstable footholds. Mana Burst is a powerful strike that also affects certain field obstacles: Adol's fire Mana and Karja's ice Mana solve different environmental problems. These actions are introduced through story progression, so new abilities change both combat options and the paths available in areas already visited. Island exploration can lead to dungeons and encounters with Griegr, but the field is not only a chain of fights. Finding hidden items, spotting devices and using character-specific powers to clear obstacles gives the duo a reason to move through each environment carefully.
The Sandras turns travel across the gulf into an active part of the adventure. The player steers the sailing vessel using sea charts, moving between island groups and points of interest rather than simply selecting a destination from a menu. Mana Sail accelerates the ship across strong currents and headwinds; sailing through wind paths helps its limited-use gauge recover. The vessel has its own health and Mana Barrier resource, and can be repaired with ship supplies while moored or strengthened through shipwright services and crew training. Upgrades affect handling, durability and armament, allowing the Sandras to withstand stronger opposition as the voyage progresses. The crew grows as rescued residents of Carnac and other companions join the voyage, and those shipmates support both practical services and combat abilities. Sea routes contain hostile vessels, merchants who can be approached for trade, fishing opportunities and islands to explore. Naval encounters use broad-reaching standard shots to impede enemy movement and shorter-range EX weapons for heavier damage; special ammunition is limited and replenished at island docks. Stronger vessels can be disabled and boarded, turning a ship encounter into close combat on the enemy deck. The sailing loop therefore links navigation, ship maintenance, resource decisions and direct fighting.

Combat on land is built around Cross Action, a choice between Solo Mode and Duo Mode. In Solo Mode the player controls either Adol or Karja, switching between them while the partner attacks automatically. Adol's sword supports fast, successive strikes; Karja's axe delivers heavier blows that are useful for breaking an enemy's defenses. Skills consume SP, which recovers over time, and repeated use raises each skill's proficiency until it becomes more powerful or develops into a follow-up technique. Duo Mode links the pair for combined attacks and a defensive guard that can automatically block certain enemy strikes. Guarding in this mode fills the Revenge Gauge; a combined skill then spends SP from both characters and receives a damage increase based on the gauge. The mode trades movement speed for coordinated offense and defense, so switching between the two styles responds to the enemy and the openings available. Some enemies also have a durability measure that must be depleted before ordinary damage can be dealt. Characters who are incapacitated can be revived at close range by spending some of the rescuer's health. Together, the combat modes make the supernatural link between Adol and Karja a practical system: they can separate to strike quickly or join forces to withstand attacks and deliver a stronger counter.
Character growth combines levels, skill use and the Release Line, a grid for Mana Seeds collected during the journey. Seeds represent different benefits and are equipped to nodes associated with Adol or Karja, allowing the player to shape their statistics and combat strengths. Placing compatible seeds together can strengthen their effects, while additional lines and skills become available as progression opens more of the system. Equipment provides another layer: weapons and armor can be improved with materials, and the two heroes use different weapons and Mana abilities. Quests from crew members create optional objectives around the gulf, and completing them can improve affinity as well as provide rewards. The ship's rescued inhabitants also make it function as a mobile home. Facilities such as a kitchen, infirmary and smithy support food preparation, recovery items and equipment, while crew members can join meals or provide services. Some crew members also work in shops or change the Sandras's combat statistics, which makes the roster matter on deck as well as in conversations. Cooking meals in the mess hall can grant temporary benefits for ship encounters, so provisions become part of preparing for naval conflict. These systems connect the main voyage to its side activities: exploration produces resources and Mana Seeds, quests deepen bonds and furnish rewards, and crew or ship improvements prepare the team for more difficult sea and island encounters. The result is an adventure in which progress is visible in both the pair's capabilities and the Sandras's growing readiness.
Ys X: Nordics is the original action RPG developed by Nihon Falcom. Its Steam edition is distinct from the later expanded Ys X: Proud Nordics release. The Steam edition includes the same central voyage with Adol, Karja and the Sandras, plus shared or split-screen cooperative play, HDR support, Steam Cloud and Steam Timeline integration. Co-op is specific to the PC release's feature set and should not be read as a description of every console edition. The original console releases include Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Presentation uses anime-styled characters and colorful coastal and island settings, with ship interiors and the sea providing a second kind of space between land excursions. English and Japanese voices are available on Steam, while the soundtrack accompanies both the real-time battles and the longer stretches of navigation. The game keeps its story focused on a compact pair of protagonists and a shipboard crew, while its movement, combat and naval systems give the gulf several different ways to be explored.
