About The Medium

Marianne, a medium haunted by unexplained visions, is drawn to an abandoned communist-era resort to investigate her powers and a mystery that has followed her. She can perceive and act in both the physical world and spirit realm, solving puzzles across realities while facing threats beyond ordinary perception.

The Medium is a third-person psychological horror adventure built around Marianne, a woman whose mediumship lets her perceive more than the ordinary world. Visions she cannot explain draw her to an abandoned communist-era resort, where she hopes to uncover the source of her abilities and a mystery that has followed her throughout her life. The resort is both a physical place with a history and a threshold to a spirit realm shaped by memory, grief and violence. The investigation asks Marianne to interpret what each side reveals, with neither reality providing a complete account on its own. The resort's communist-era history grounds this supernatural investigation in a place once built for ordinary visitors and institutions.

Its central device is called dual reality: the physical world and the spirit world can appear together on screen, with Marianne sometimes present in both at once. Each realm gives a different reading of the same environment. A blocked route in the physical space may have an opening or mechanism in the spirit realm, while a change on one side can affect what is possible on the other. At other moments, Marianne moves between the realities, using what she learned in one to make progress in the other. The split view makes her unusual perception a practical part of exploration rather than a background detail. The game can present a split view when both versions matter, while other moments let Marianne cross between them to act in one realm.

Puzzles use that relationship between spaces. Marianne looks for clues, objects and environmental changes that make sense across both versions of a room. She may need to inspect the physical remnants of the resort, then consider how the spirit world reframes them, or use an action available in one realm to alter the path through both. The game’s progression therefore depends on close observation and connecting visual information. It presents supernatural ability as a way to investigate and manipulate the setting, with obstacles asking the player to work out what the two realities share and where they diverge. Some obstacles require changing realities to reach a path or mechanism, then carrying that solution back into the physical space.

Marianne also has distinct psychic abilities that support navigation and survival. Her powers can affect the environment, create protection against hostile forces and produce spirit energy capable of breaking obstacles or escaping dangerous entities. These actions sit alongside ordinary exploration, so players move between reading a room, finding an object and responding to a threat. The abilities are tied to the same premise as the dual-world presentation: Marianne can interact with phenomena that are invisible or inaccessible to others. Their use changes with the situation, as exploration and danger are interwoven throughout the resort. She can create a spirit shield against hostile forces and release spirit blasts to break obstacles or escape deadly entities.

The spirit realm is not simply a transparent overlay of the resort. It is a separate, distorted dimension with its own landscapes and tormented souls, shaped by memories and the consequences of past events. Environments take on a surreal character, and the game’s imagery draws inspiration from the work of Polish painter Zdzisław Beksiński. That influence is visible in the realm’s unsettling forms and oppressive atmosphere, while the physical world retains the abandoned architecture and objects of a once-functioning resort. Moving between these contrasting spaces lets the story place ordinary traces beside more abstract expressions of trauma. The dual soundtrack, co-composed by Akira Yamaoka and Arkadiusz Reikowski, gives the two-world premise an audible counterpart.

A persistent supernatural threat, The Maw, gives the journey a survival-horror edge. It is an entity born from tragedy and a danger that Marianne must face while exploring the spirit world. The player cannot treat every encounter as a conventional fight: awareness, timing and use of Marianne’s abilities shape how she escapes or withstands danger. Hostile forces and blocked routes also reinforce the need to read the environment carefully. The tension comes from understanding what the threat can perceive and selecting an opening to move through, rather than relying on weapons as the answer to every obstacle. The Maw is described as relentless and fear-feeding, making the spirit world's pursuit an ongoing hazard for Marianne.

The abandoned resort provides the main frame for Marianne’s investigation, but its story extends beyond a straightforward search through empty rooms. Each step connects the physical site to emotional traces and disturbing secrets preserved in the spirit realm. The mystery concerns the origins of Marianne’s powers as well as events associated with the place, and the game develops it through exploration, puzzles and encounters. Its focus stays on her effort to understand what she sees and what those perceptions mean. The two realities make that investigation tangible: each offers evidence, danger and a different perspective on the same troubled past. Exploration of abandoned halls, forgotten chambers and memories left behind advances the mystery of the resort and Marianne's past.
