About The Gardens Between

The Gardens Between is a single-player puzzle adventure about childhood friends Arina and Frendt, who travel through surreal garden islands shaped by their shared memories. Rather than steering either character directly, players move time forward and backward, changing cause and effect to solve puzzles, reach each island's summit and light constellations that reveal a bittersweet story of friendship.

Arina and Frendt begin as close friends whose ordinary childhood world gives way to a chain of floating, dreamlike gardens. Familiar objects appear among the plants and paths, but each has been enlarged or rearranged into part of an island-scale memory. The places are intimate rather than sprawling: a small route, a handful of recognizable things, and a summit that marks the island's goal. As the pair travel, the gardens turn their friendship into something the player can examine through action. The story follows the memories they have built together and the emotional weight of change, while leaving the meaning of particular moments to be read through what the characters encounter. The game uses no spoken dialogue or written exposition to explain that relationship; its central ideas emerge through the islands, the pair's movement and the objects that recur in altered forms.

The defining control is time itself. Arina and Frendt move along a set route as the player advances or reverses the timeline, with the world changing around them in response. This makes the pair's progress less like conventional platforming and more like working through a sequence of connected events. A barrier, a moving object or an environmental change can be encountered at a different point in the timeline, and returning to an earlier moment can alter what happens later. The player watches the scene, adjusts the flow of time and observes how cause and effect shift. There is no need to guide each character with a separate movement scheme: the main task is to find the point in the sequence where the surroundings and the friends' actions line up to make a path possible.

Each island is a self-contained puzzle space with a clear destination at its highest point. Reaching that apex involves reading how its parts change across time rather than searching a broad landscape for unrelated objectives. The forward and backward movement of the timeline gives the player a way to revisit an event and test another sequence, while pauses allow the current arrangement to be considered. This simple set of controls supports puzzles whose complexity comes from timing and consequence. An action in one moment can change the state of the surroundings in another, so the useful question is often when an object or route reaches the state the pair need to continue. Progress is organized island by island, with each completed ascent carrying the journey toward another memory.

The islands draw their visual language from everyday childhood objects as well as garden imagery. A familiar object placed out of scale or surrounded by an impossible landscape can work both as a puzzle element and as a clue to the memory behind the place. The settings shift from one compact island to another, creating variation without breaking the larger feeling of a shared dream. Their storybook-like forms make paths and landmarks legible, while the surreal combinations keep the environment from reading as a literal recreation of a real location. Rather than filling the world with explanatory text, the game asks the player to notice what has been brought into a garden and how the scene changes as time moves. The result is a progression through places that feel personal to the two friends even when their exact history remains unspoken.

At the top of each isle, the pair light a constellation of memories, giving the puzzle route a visible endpoint and linking the islands to the game's narrative structure. The action is more than a marker that a level is finished: it frames each garden as one piece of a larger recollection. The player sees the friends move through a sequence of moments, then watches those moments contribute to a growing pattern in the sky. The story's bittersweet themes of friendship, memory and change give that repeated act a personal context. The game keeps the details of the emotional arc restrained, letting objects and repeated visual motifs do much of the work. As a result, puzzle completion and story progression remain closely connected: reaching the summit resolves the island's immediate challenge and adds another fragment to the relationship being explored.

The presentation supports this quiet form of storytelling. The game is designed for one player and uses simple controls, without text, speech or a complex interface. An ambient soundtrack by Tim Shiel accompanies the traversal, while the uncluttered interface keeps attention on the timeline and the scene's changing state. That structure also shapes the pace of play: the player can move time, stop to inspect a moment, and reverse course when the visible result suggests another arrangement. Across more than twenty garden islands, the repeated goal of reaching a summit gives the journey a consistent rhythm, while the memories and objects change its context. The story grows clearer as the pair pass through each place together, and each new island lets a different memory surface through its objects and time-based puzzle.
