About The Evil Within 2

Detective Sebastian Castellanos returns to STEM when Mobius offers him a chance to find his missing daughter, Lily. The Evil Within 2 takes place in Union, a separate simulated town built around Lily’s mind. Larger areas, stealth, scavenging, crafting, weapon upgrades, and shifting horror domains shape the search.

The Evil Within 2 follows Sebastian Castellanos after the events of the first game. When Mobius tells him that his daughter Lily is alive inside STEM, he chooses to enter the system and find her. Juli Kidman remains in contact from outside and supplies information as Sebastian searches. The story begins in Union, a simulated small American town constructed around Lily’s mind as its Core. Its ordinary houses, shops and streets are being transformed as the Core goes missing and the world begins to come apart. Mobius personnel have been sent into the town before Sebastian; scattered operatives can become sources of information and assistance. The central goal is immediate and personal—find Lily—while learning why the town is unstable and what has happened to the people living within it.

The campaign alternates between broader stretches of Union and more controlled story sequences. Larger neighbourhoods give Sebastian room to investigate buildings, search for supplies and choose how to approach threats; blocked streets and broken sections of the simulated town help define where he can go. The experience still has a directed campaign and chapter progression, but exploration in Union is less confined than the first game’s chapter-by-chapter corridors. Some story developments lead into distinct horror domains shaped by powerful personalities within STEM, creating sharp shifts in architecture and atmosphere. These areas keep the search from becoming a single continuous town excursion. Union’s layout also contains routes and buildings whose apparent normality is interrupted by its failing state. Exploration is therefore a practical part of survival and an optional way to learn more about the world around Sebastian.

Stealth is a central option for dealing with enemies in the town. Sebastian can crouch, move carefully and approach an isolated target for a sneak kill, or observe a group before deciding whether to engage. Cover and corners can support a quiet approach, and the Stealth skill tree can later improve crouched movement and allow sneak kills from around a corner while in cover. The player can also place or use traps and draw enemies toward a prepared danger. If a quiet route fails, firearms and the Warden Crossbow offer a more direct response, but limited supplies make a loud fight expensive. Sebastian remains vulnerable even as his abilities improve, so these choices affect the risk of crossing Union rather than turning him into an invincible fighter. The game’s larger spaces make preparation and route selection meaningful parts of each encounter.

Combat combines firearms, the Warden Crossbow and environmental opportunities against disturbing creatures that inhabit Union. Ammunition found in the world is limited and may not suit the weapon the player wants to use next, so shooting is balanced against sneaking, running and hiding. The crossbow adds specialised bolts to that decision: the player can equip different types and improve the weapon with Weapon Parts. Sebastian’s Communicator also has a role outside direct combat. Signals picked up in the environment can lead him to traces of earlier events, giving the player a way to investigate what happened in a location. The resulting loop shifts between scanning for signals, moving through an area, gathering resources and reacting to danger. It gives exploration an investigative function: what Sebastian finds can explain part of Union’s history while changing his immediate needs for health, ammunition or a safer route.

Scavenged materials feed into crafting and keep the resource loop connected to exploration. At a workbench in a safe house or elsewhere in Union, Sebastian can make ammunition for his weapons, crossbow bolts and healing supplies. Herbs are used for Medical Syringes and Kits; Gunpowder and other Components go toward ammunition and bolts, with the Harpoon Bolt as an exception to the Gunpowder requirement. If a workbench is unavailable, he can craft in the field, but doing so costs more resources. Weapon Parts form a separate pool used at workbenches to improve firearms and the crossbow, including attributes such as power, capacity, firing rate and reload time. Healing, ammunition and weapon development therefore draw on distinct materials rather than a single currency.

Sebastian’s personal abilities use Green Gel, separate from the Weapon Parts spent on guns. Gel upgrades are arranged across five skill categories: Health, Stealth, Combat, Recovery and Athleticism. Some purchases improve parameters such as health recovery or aiming stability; other costly investments unlock active abilities. Bullet Cascade, for example, temporarily increases shooting damage with consecutive hits and stops when its duration ends or Sebastian runs out of ammunition. Workbenches and safe houses provide places to prepare, and Bethesda’s description notes that crafting at a workbench is more resource-efficient than making supplies in the field. The player thus manages two complementary forms of progression: weapon parts refine the equipment, while Green Gel changes Sebastian’s capabilities. These choices let a player emphasise durability, stealth, combat or movement while leaving the game’s underlying danger intact.

Union’s remaining Mobius operatives add optional tasks to the search. The publisher’s story FAQ explains that Sebastian can encounter agents as he explores and, if they are still alive, they may offer side quests leading to weapons, resource caches or information. Safe houses and workbenches make those detours useful by providing opportunities to save, recover and turn gathered materials into supplies before returning to danger. Sebastian’s contact with Kidman links his exploration back to the real world, while the Communicator links local investigation to events that occurred inside STEM. Together, the side missions and signal traces make Union more than a succession of combat arenas: the player can pursue help, supplies and context in the same spaces where the world is breaking down. The main search for Lily continues through that changing town and its separate nightmare domains.
