About The Darkness II

Jackie Estacado, head of a New York crime family, carries an ancient force called the Darkness. In this first-person action game, firearms and supernatural Demon Arms operate together: Jackie can shoot while grabbing or hurling enemies and objects, but light suppresses his powers and health recovery. A separate Vendettas mode adds four playable characters and co-op missions.

The Darkness II continues Jackie Estacado’s story after he has become the head of a New York crime family and host to the Darkness, an ancient supernatural force. The campaign follows Jackie as the Brotherhood seeks the entity he carries, while he tries to protect his people and understand what is happening to him. The single-player campaign moves through a present-day urban world, criminal-family spaces and more unsettling environments as Jackie’s relationships and the Darkness’ influence remain tied together. Jenny is part of Jackie’s personal concerns, and conversations in the mansion and asylum provide context, objectives and directions between the action sequences.

Combat is organized around four simultaneous tools: two guns and two Demon Arms. Jackie can fire a pair of small firearms while the supernatural arms slash at nearby threats, grab vulnerable enemies, or seize objects from the environment. A grabbed opponent can be thrown into others, struck or used for an execution; debris can become a projectile or a temporary shield. Objects such as a car door, propane tank, pool stick or engine have different uses, so combat involves looking for items that suit the immediate situation. This is more than a weapon wheel layered over shooting: aiming and firing can happen alongside arm actions, allowing the player to interrupt a group, create an opening and then use a firearm to finish the exchange.

The Darkness is powerful but its abilities depend on darkness. Bright light prevents Jackie from using Darkness powers and stops his health from regenerating, making lamps, spotlights, light cannons and flash devices tactical hazards. Some lights can be shot out; others require their power source to be destroyed, and a light-carrying enemy can be dealt with directly or have the light disabled. That rule makes the environment part of combat. The player can seek cover and shadow, remove a light source, then return to using the Demon Arms and powers. Jackie also recovers some health after avoiding damage for a short period, while eating the heart of a fallen enemy restores additional health and awards Essence.

Essence connects fighting to character progression. Defeating enemies earns the currency, and Talent Shrines let Jackie spend it on new abilities or upgrades. The available branches improve firearm handling, Demon Arm attacks, Darkness powers and the benefits gained from executions. Execution types can restore health, provide ammunition, hasten the recharge of powers or create a Darkness Shield, turning a vulnerable enemy into a choice about which resource Jackie needs. The sequence matters: some talents require earlier abilities, so new options open through linked prerequisites. The system therefore rewards varied combat actions with tools that change how the next fight can be handled, instead of assigning all progression to a single linear upgrade track.

Several active powers extend that choice beyond firearms and arms. Swarm releases dark insects that stun nearby opponents for a short time, creating room to reposition or grab a target. Gun Channeling sends the Darkness through Jackie’s weapons, temporarily increasing their damage without spending ammunition; later talents can change how long it lasts or how it behaves. Demon Arm upgrades add attacks such as Ground Pound, which lifts and slams an enemy to stun nearby foes, or Dark Blast, which makes grabbed objects explode on impact. These abilities are acquired through the Talent Shrine and their cooldowns make timing relevant. Executions can speed the recharge of Swarm and Gun Channeling, linking close-range takedowns to renewed access to those powers.

Progress between fights is guided by the campaign’s objective and conversation systems. New objectives appear when the task changes, and the objective interface shows the current destination and its distance, keeping Jackie’s route legible as the story moves through different spaces. Completed objectives are crossed through before fading, while a marker indicates the next destination. The objective interface can be reopened to review the current task and destination. In the mansion and the asylum, an on-screen conversation icon identifies allies and other characters Jackie can approach. Those exchanges add plot information, explain further gameplay and point toward what comes next, so the player can gather context before leaving for another mission. These quieter hub scenes give Jackie’s family and associates room in the narrative between combat sequences, while the objective interface tracks the immediate direction of travel.

Vendettas is a separate campaign that runs parallel to Jackie’s story. It can be played solo or as a four-person cooperative mode, with Inugami, Shoshanna, JP Dumond and Jimmy Wilson each bringing a specialized weapon and tactics of their own. Its mission structure differs from the first-person Jackie campaign: the team works through story missions together, while Hit Lists provide standalone assignments. The mode gives the wider conflict another perspective and a distinct set of playable abilities. Vendettas complements the main campaign, while Jackie’s progression, family story and light-dependent powers remain the centre of the single-player experience.
