About S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky - Enhanced Edition

Before the events of Shadow of Chornobyl, mercenary Scar is caught in the Zone’s growing instability and becomes involved in a struggle among its factions. He crosses dangerous territory toward the Chornobyl power plant while surviving emissions, anomalies, mutants and armed rivals.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky - Enhanced Edition is a prequel to Shadow of Chornobyl. Its central character is Scar, a mercenary who has learned to survive the Zone’s deadly emissions. The campaign opens in the Great Swamps as powerful blowouts move anomaly fields and factions compete for new territory. From this unsettled starting point, Scar travels from the Great Swamps toward the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, through areas where stalkers and rival groups are fighting over routes and resources. The story follows his journey across the year before the Marked One’s campaign and presents events around Strelok from another character’s point of view. Scar is not the amnesiac protagonist from Shadow of Chornobyl: he enters this story as an experienced mercenary with a different connection to the Zone and a role in its faction conflict.

Clear Sky begins in the Great Swamps, a low-lying region of waterlogged ground, narrow paths and scattered camps. The environment makes movement and sight lines important: shallow water and vegetation can conceal threats, while exposed crossings make a stalker vulnerable to gunfire or mutants. From there, the route opens into other established regions and later reaches areas such as Limansk and the Red Forest. Settlements act as places to speak with faction members, find traders and mechanics, gather tasks and prepare before moving on. The PDA helps Scar track objectives, contacts and the map as the campaign takes him farther into the Zone. He can follow main-story leads while also taking work or looking for supplies in nearby areas, choosing whether a detour is manageable with the ammunition, medicine and protective equipment he is carrying.

The Zone’s anomalies and emissions shape both the danger and the rewards of travel. Anomalies can make familiar paths unsafe, and artifacts form within their fields; these objects may have useful properties, harmful side effects or value for trade. In Clear Sky, artifact hunting relies on a detector: Scar uses its signals to locate an artifact within an anomaly field and approach it carefully rather than simply spotting every prize on the ground. Bolts help test hazardous ground as he moves through it. A detector search is a small expedition inside a larger journey, since the player must watch for environmental exposure and other inhabitants while judging whether the artifact is worth the risk. Radiation protection, suits, medical supplies, bandages and food all help manage different needs, and the backpack forces choices between survival gear, ammunition and loot.

Combat is built around first-person firefights against armed stalkers, faction fighters, soldiers and mutated creatures. Weapons have distinct handling, accuracy, power and firing behavior; ammunition choice matters against more protected targets, and guns can wear down and misfire. Mechanics in faction camps can improve weapons and protective suits, with different specialists offering different kinds of work. Upgrades change how equipment performs, so spending money and finding access to a capable technician can matter as much as finding another gun. Scar also has to manage health, fatigue, bleeding and exposure while traveling. A firefight may consume medical supplies or ammunition that were meant for the next stretch of the route, and worn equipment can make a later encounter harder. The practical loop is to take a task, prepare, cross dangerous ground, fight or evade opposition, then return with salvage or an artifact and decide what to repair or buy.

Faction Wars give Clear Sky a system of territorial fighting beyond the central campaign. Duty, Freedom, the neutral stalkers and the Bandits contest strategic positions, resources and routes through the Zone. Scar can join one of these groups or assist its fighters, then help capture or defend positions as the local balance changes. Participation can influence a faction’s standing and its practical benefits, including what its traders stock and which equipment improvements its mechanics can provide. Relations also affect whether members treat Scar as an ally or an enemy, so a commitment on one front can close off easy passage through another. Clear Sky itself is part of the opening conflict, with Scar initially supporting its aims; the wider faction-war activity then gives the player ways to get involved in struggles across the regions while the main story advances.

The Zone continues to change around Scar as stalkers travel, fight, rest and take on tasks, while creatures move through the same spaces. Time passes through day and night, and visibility shifts for both the player and other inhabitants; some mutants are more active after dark. Emissions periodically intensify the danger and are central to Scar’s unusual ability to survive them; players must find shelter when a blowout threatens. These rhythms give journeys a changing texture: a route that is clear in daylight may be harder to cross at night, and a camp can become a place to recover, talk and listen before moving again. The 2025 Enhanced Edition preserves this Clear Sky campaign while adding the Steam-listed visual upgrades, improved weapon and character presentation, bug fixes, quality-of-life adjustments and full controller support.
