About Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition
In Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition, undercover Hong Kong police officer Wei Shen infiltrates the Sun On Yee triad while trying to maintain his standing inside the organisation. Story missions combine martial-arts fights, investigations, gunplay and driving across a dense open-world city. This remastered edition includes the original game and its released downloadable content, including additional story episodes.
Sleeping Dogs follows Wei Shen, a Hong Kong-born officer who returns to the city after working for the San Francisco Police Department. His assignment is to enter the Sun On Yee, a powerful triad organisation, and help the Hong Kong Police Force dismantle it from within. Wei therefore answers to two groups whose expectations pull in different directions: police superiors need evidence and controlled operations, while triad associates expect loyalty and action. The story moves between these roles through separate police and gang missions, with Wei’s relationships and his position inside the organisation shaping the crime drama. The setting is a contemporary Hong Kong rendered as an interconnected open city of streets, markets, alleys, waterfront districts and elevated roads.
The investigation side gives the undercover premise a distinct police procedure. Wei receives cases from his department and follows leads through conversations, observation and evidence-related tasks, with some activities using the smartphone to access security cameras or handle locks. That device also keeps contacts and objectives close at hand, connecting the city’s optional jobs to the central assignment. Cases and gang missions are separate strands, so the same neighbourhood can serve as a police investigation site in one task and a triad meeting ground in another. When police work ends, the way Wei conducted it matters to Cop experience: avoiding civilian harm and property damage preserves more of the reward, while reckless collateral damage reduces it. This makes restraint a progression consideration even in an action story built around frequent fights.
The main activity is mission based, but getting between objectives is part of the rhythm. Wei can run, climb and vault through streets and rooftops, or take cars and motorcycles through traffic. Driving sequences include pursuits and races, and vehicles can be hijacked while moving, turning a chase into a fast transition between cars. Story assignments can shift from tailing or questioning someone to close combat, a shootout or an escape. Outside the main plot, the city offers police cases, favors, jobs, events and street races. Cases use Wei’s phone and other investigative interactions to follow leads; optional activities give additional routes to earn experience, raise his reputation or access more of the city’s activities.

Hand-to-hand combat is a defining system. Wei faces groups of opponents in arenas filled with objects that can be used for environmental attacks, and the fight asks the player to alternate between striking, grappling, countering and repositioning. A visible enemy warning signals when to counter, while grabs and heavy attacks can open enemies to follow-up moves or finishers. Combat performance also feeds Triad experience: counters, headshots, environmental finishes and heavy attacks contribute toward Triad levels, which award points for combat upgrades. Firearms appear in particular encounters and introduce aiming, cover and ammunition management; the game also uses cinematic gunplay during some fights and vehicle sequences. These systems make mission results depend on how Wei handles both unarmed groups and armed opposition.
Progression tracks several parts of Wei’s double life separately. Cop experience comes from cases and missions, with less awarded when civilians, officers or property are harmed; Cop upgrades add shooting advantages, utilities and vehicle-related abilities. Triad experience is earned through combat actions and unlocks new offensive and defensive moves. Face experience comes from favors and impressive activities, raising Wei’s standing with Hong Kong residents and merchants; increased Face levels unlock combat benefits as well as better merchandise, discounts, clothing and vehicles. Health and melee improvements provide further character growth, with hidden items around the city contributing to some upgrades. The phone is a practical hub for contacts and tasks, and its functions also support activities such as safe cracking, camera hacking and photography.
Away from the main assignment, Hong Kong offers activities with their own practical rewards. Street races put different classes of vehicles to use, while favors introduce residents and businesses beyond Wei’s police and triad contacts. Clothing shops, vehicle dealers and food stalls give the money earned from jobs a purpose in the city; meals restore health and some purchases provide temporary benefits. Wei can return to safehouses between missions to change clothes, and items sold around the city can furnish them. Jade Statues hidden through the districts can be taken to Sifu Kwok for new combat moves, while praying at Health Shrines increases Wei’s maximum health. These give a player concrete reasons to explore on foot instead of driving straight to the next story marker.

The Definitive Edition is a remastered version of the 2012 game for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows PC and macOS, and it incorporates the original release’s downloadable content. The added material includes costume and vehicle packs alongside larger self-contained episodes: Nightmare in North Point shifts into supernatural horror, The Zodiac Tournament centres on a martial-arts competition, and Year of the Snake continues Wei’s police work after the central campaign. These additions sit alongside the main undercover story and extend the package with distinct settings and missions. They do not replace the original campaign’s Hong Kong investigation, its Sun On Yee conflict or the progression built around Cop, Triad and Face experience.
