About Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition
Lara Croft follows Trinity into the jungles of Peru after triggering a chain of events tied to a Maya apocalypse. Shadow of the Tomb Raider blends climbing, underwater exploration, stealth, combat and environmental puzzles. The Definitive Edition combines the campaign with seven DLC Challenge Tombs and downloadable weapons, outfits and skills.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the concluding chapter of Lara Croft’s origin trilogy, sending her from Mexico into the jungles of Peru as she pursues Trinity, the military organisation tied to her research. Lara’s decisions set a Maya apocalypse in motion, so the expedition becomes a race to understand the danger and prevent further catastrophe. Her longtime ally Jonah Maiava travels with her, giving the story a close human counterpart to Lara’s increasingly urgent mission. The narrative follows her effort to stop Trinity while confronting the consequences of acting alone and too quickly. Its central tension is not simply whether Lara can reach the next ruin: the crisis forces her to weigh her determination against the people affected by it. The campaign is designed as an action-adventure and puzzle game, with story scenes connecting exploration, tomb challenges and encounters with hostile forces.
The journey moves through the jungles and underground spaces of Peru, with the hidden city of Paititi serving as a major hub. Eidos-Montréal describes the environment as a place to master and survive: routes wind through dense vegetation, cliffs, ruins and waterlogged passages, while underwater sections use crevasses and long tunnels to make navigation part of the challenge. The hub provides a populated counterpoint to isolated tombs and combat spaces. Lara can move between investigation and danger, following the campaign while also exploring connected areas and speaking with people who live there. The environment is functional as well as scenic: foliage conceals Lara, climbable surfaces and rope routes open vertical paths, and water can conceal passages or create a limited-air traversal problem. The game repeatedly asks the player to read the terrain before choosing how to cross it.
Traversal links these spaces through jumping, climbing, scrambling, rappelling and swimming. Lara uses her climbing axe and rope equipment to negotiate walls and descents, while underwater routes may require careful movement through narrow channels and back to air pockets. Tomb entrances can demand advanced traversal, so reaching a puzzle chamber may involve finding a route across a cliff face or through submerged tunnels. In the jungle, paths can be obscured by foliage and terrain rather than presented as a simple corridor. The player steers Lara through these spaces, looks for handholds and usable surfaces, and judges when to climb, drop, swim or change direction. Platform difficulty can be adjusted separately from combat and puzzle difficulty, allowing traversal assistance to be tuned without changing the other two categories.

When Trinity patrols an area, Lara can approach combat as a hunter rather than immediately meeting enemies in open firefights. She can hide in vines, cover herself in mud to blend against marked walls, and use the environment to strike and withdraw. A quiet takedown can begin with the skill Eagle’s Talon: Lara drops onto an enemy and uses a rope to suspend the target from a branch. Perception herbs can help her track dangerous predators, including jaguars, whose attacks require the player to watch their movement and use available space. If stealth breaks down, Lara can switch among a bow, pistol, rifle and shotgun, and craft silent arrows or special ammunition. The mix of concealment, positioning and direct weapon use makes enemy encounters a sequence of choices about exposure, timing and escape routes.
Tombs put exploration and puzzle solving in the foreground. They are dangerous spaces reached through advanced traversal and filled with lethal puzzles. Their mechanisms require players to inspect how the chamber is built, then manipulate environmental objects and routes to move forward. Some tomb approaches and interiors involve underwater navigation, where air pockets offer brief places to recover before continuing through hazardous passages. Long swims can bring threats such as piranhas or eels into the route, making breath management and concealment part of the challenge. Solving a tomb combines reading spatial clues, operating mechanisms and executing climbs or jumps. Challenge Tombs are a distinct activity alongside the campaign’s story missions, and the Definitive Edition adds seven more through its included DLC. The base campaign and this added tomb content are related but separate parts of the package.
At Base Camps, Lara can manage skills, inventory and fast travel. Shadow introduces three skill categories—Warrior, Scavenger and Seeker—and some abilities are unlocked by completing Challenge Tombs. The inventory also lets the player work with weapons, outfits and equipment. Outfit customization is specific to this game: Lara can combine upper-body and lower-body clothing pieces separately, and each piece carries skill effects. Those choices connect exploration to the next encounter, since a player can develop Lara through earned abilities and configure clothing around different advantages. Survival Instinct is among Lara’s field tools. She can craft silent arrows and special ammunition in the field and use herbal mixtures. Puzzle, traversal and combat difficulty can also be set independently, so a player can change guidance or pressure in one area without resetting the other two.

Howl of the Monkey Gods provides a specific example of what a DLC Challenge Tomb adds. Included in the Nightmare pack and set in Paititi, it uses timed sequences keyed to the beat of a drum, making attention to an audio cue part of the puzzle. Its route combines platforms and ziplines with climbs into high spaces, so progress depends on judging a path through the chamber as well as the timing of each event. The associated Monkey Do achievement is linked to White Breath, a skill that changes Lara’s Fear Arrows so they release a cloud of hallucinogenic vapour. This tomb connects traversal challenges and rhythm cues with an altered stealth weapon, giving the Definitive Edition’s added content a distinct mechanical variation.
