About Northgard: Definitive Edition

Northgard: Definitive Edition is a Norse mythology real-time strategy game about settling a newly discovered continent. The player leads a Viking clan, assigning villagers to jobs, managing supplies through severe winters, and expanding across contested regions. Different clans offer distinct bonuses and routes to victory, while story, Conquest, Bifröst and multiplayer modes frame separate campaigns and battles.

In Northgard, Viking clans sail to a newly discovered continent described as a land of mystery, danger and riches. The player leads one clan as it explores and settles this harsh territory, building a village into a community able to withstand winter, hostile creatures and rival Vikings. The real-time strategy structure keeps the focus on the living settlement: people must work, supplies must last, territory must be secured, and a plan for victory must develop alongside the village. The main story follows Rig, heir to the Viking High King, and his companion Brand as they investigate the theft of the Regal Horn and travel through Northgard. The world draws on Norse mythology, placing gods, mythic hazards and rival clans around a small settlement whose survival depends on practical decisions as much as military strength.

A settlement begins with a Town Hall and a small group of villagers. Villagers can be assigned to buildings that turn them into specialists: woodcutters produce timber, while farmers, hunters and fishers supply food when their workplaces are available. Those assignments are flexible, so the player can move workers between jobs as a shortage or new opportunity appears. This makes construction a way to create jobs as well as a way to add buildings. A specialist workforce competes with the need for general villagers, soldiers and other roles, so each new structure draws people away from something else they could be doing. Building placement is also bounded by the region system, which limits how many structures can occupy a territory. The player therefore has to coordinate the size of the village with the land and population actually available.

The map is divided into separate regions, each of which can hold resources, treasure, hazards or hostile inhabitants. Scouting reveals what lies beyond the clan’s current territory; colonizing a region then lets the settlement use its resources and build there. Expansion costs food, and the price rises as the clan claims more territory, so taking land too quickly can weaken the stockpile needed to feed everyone or survive the next season. Regions have limited building space, which gives each patch of land a practical role: an area with a deposit or food source can support a specialized operation, while the surrounding territory creates room to grow. Neutral creatures and rival clans make a discovered region more than an economic prize. Expanding routes, scouting threats and deciding which territory is worth its cost all feed into the same map-wide contest.

The passage between summer and winter gives resource planning a regular rhythm. Food must support the population and help pay for territorial expansion, while wood is needed for construction, and stockpiles must be prepared before the harsher winter season. Workers can be reassigned as needs shift; an army that is not needed at the border might instead contribute to food production before winter. Lore works as a research resource, unlocking knowledge that can support the clan’s economy or military, including improvements that help warriors endure the cold. This development competes with immediate needs, because the same population and territory must keep producing the supplies that make further growth possible. Combat has to fit into that calendar too: moving units away from home may expose the settlement or drain productive workers, while preparing knowledge and supplies can make an expedition more sustainable.

The clan selected at the start changes how those shared systems fit together. Clans bring their own bonuses, features and possible routes to a win. The Stag clan begins with extra resources and places greater emphasis on fame; the Goat clan can raise sheep to support its food supply; and Wolf warriors can gain food by hunting hostile creatures while also helping the clan remain happy. These differences can shift how many villagers are needed in economic roles, how quickly a clan is prepared to fight, or which advantages its player pursues. Victory can come through conquest, trade, lore or fame, and each route asks for a different mix of development and resources. A clan’s special traits therefore shape more than the opening minutes: they influence which threats to address, what to build next and how the settlement turns its strengths into a path to victory.

Definitive Edition combines the base game with the Cross of Vidar expansion and three additional clans, according to Shiro Games’ release announcement. The expansion adds a second story campaign: after Ragnarök, Rig, Liv and Svarn reach Neustria, home of the Southern Kingdoms, where new leaders and conflicts shape their next chapter. Outside the story, Conquest offers solo or cooperative scenario sequences, and the game also supports multiplayer battles. The edition adds the Valhalla biome and makes Bifröst’s other biomes available in regular play; Bifröst itself sends a group of up to four players across realms against the Vanir. These modes use the same clan and settlement foundations in different structures, from one-off map contests to connected challenges and campaign missions. The included digital artbook and art gallery provide additional ways to explore the world’s visual development beyond the strategy matches.
