About No Man's Sky

Explore a procedurally generated science-fiction universe of planets, star systems and space stations. No Man's Sky combines planetary survival, resource gathering, crafting, starship travel and base building, letting players follow missions or set their own goals as they discover worlds, improve equipment and move between systems.

No Man's Sky places the player in a vast, procedurally generated universe that can be crossed one planet and star system at a time. A visit can mean landing on a world, scanning its terrain and life, collecting materials, or returning to orbit to choose another destination. Worlds have different environments and resources, so exploration is also a process of learning what each place offers and what equipment it demands. A starship links the surface to space, while the Galaxy Map helps select systems and chart a longer route. The game provides missions and structured activities, but its central rhythm also supports self-directed projects: finding an interesting planet, improving a ship, establishing a home, or simply continuing onward to see what lies elsewhere.

On a planet, the Exosuit protects the Traveller and supports life systems that must be maintained as conditions change. Hazardous weather and hostile environments make shelter, suit upgrades and resource management part of deciding how long to remain outside. The Multi-Tool serves as a scanner and a mining device, allowing the player to identify nearby points of interest and extract substances from terrain or deposits. Those materials can be collected directly, carried in inventory and used later for crafting, repairs or refuelling. The practical loop is to scan an unfamiliar area, choose useful resources, monitor suit needs and decide whether to keep exploring or return to safety. A planet's features can also reveal buried sites and other places that reward a closer survey.

Raw materials become more useful through crafting and refining. The player gathers substances with the Multi-Tool, combines components into products, and uses refiners to process inputs into materials needed for equipment, structures and other technology. Recipes and blueprints expand the available options; technology can be installed in the Exosuit, Multi-Tool, starship and planetary vehicles to improve particular capabilities. The result is a progression loop in which a resource collected in one place can solve a later problem elsewhere. Inventory space makes the choice of what to carry relevant, while damaged equipment and depleted systems can turn a planned trip into a return journey. The game gives players several ways to gather, buy or process what they need, and building a reliable supply often matters as much as discovering a new destination.

Space travel opens another scale of movement and activity. The player flies between a planet's surface and orbit, uses faster-than-light travel to reach other planets in a system, and warps between star systems with the Galaxy Map as a guide. Starships can be upgraded for different needs, and space stations offer places to trade, interact with alien characters and manage equipment. Larger freighters provide mobile storage and can serve as a base between journeys; frigates can be sent on fleet missions from a freighter. Space also brings encounters with other ships, pirates and hazards, so piloting and combat sit alongside navigation and trading. The rhythm alternates between focused surface trips and longer passages through space, with the player deciding which discoveries or tasks justify the next jump.

A base turns gathered resources into a lasting foothold. Players can claim locations and construct modular rooms, storage, farming areas and specialist equipment, then use teleporters to connect bases with other destinations. Building requires materials gathered through exploration and learned construction plans; more advanced setups can include power generation, wiring and machinery that extracts resources from surveyed deposits. Farming lets plants grow over time, with the available crops depending on their environment or a controlled growing space. These projects can provide practical supplies and a place to organise future expeditions, while freighters offer a separate buildable home that travels between systems. The base system supports both compact shelters against local conditions and more elaborate settlements shaped around production, transport or personal design.

Space stations and the Space Anomaly bring explorers into contact with alien characters and other Travellers. Conversations, missions and research stations offer routes to new tasks, technology or construction plans. Solo play is available, and online co-op lets players meet and undertake activities together; shared projects can include exploration, building and missions. The game also offers time-bounded community expeditions as distinct themed journeys, with their own objectives and rewards, while the broader universe remains available for ongoing exploration. Across these activities, progression is less a single ladder than a collection of connected systems: travel reveals resources and locations, resources support repairs and crafting, and improved equipment makes new environments easier to approach. Players can follow the game's prompts or use them as a starting point for their own longer-term plans.

Recent systems add further reasons to survey a world carefully. Fossil deposits can be excavated for individual bones, which players can arrange into skeleton displays, package for transport, trade or sell; dig sites and fossil collectors give that activity its own search-and-collection loop. A separate salvage activity uses a Multi-Tool gravity device to lift and move large debris, load collected scrap onto customisable ground vehicles, and haul it to processing yards for reclamation. Volatile cargo makes transport a matter of managing the load as well as finding it. These systems extend the established pattern of searching a landscape, gathering useful materials and deciding what to build or bring back. Whether assembling a fossil exhibit or recovering industrial wreckage, the player moves between planetary exploration, tool use, inventory choices and a destination that gives collected objects a purpose.
