About Kona II: Brume

In Kona II: Brume, detective Carl Faubert returns to northern Québec in 1970, where a strange mist has cut off the mining village of Manastan. Investigate the settlement, follow clues in Carl’s journal, and encounter people stranded by an avalanche. Travel by dog sled, inspect documents, and face cold, wildlife and danger while piecing together the Brume’s mystery.

Kona II: Brume is a first-person narrative adventure set in northern Québec in 1970. Detective Carl Faubert returns to the fictional region of Manastan, where a strange phenomenon called the Brume has disrupted a rural mining village and the surrounding natural world. Snow isolates the settlement, and an avalanche has left people stranded. Carl sets out to investigate the mist and move through a place where ordinary explanations are increasingly difficult to rely on. The journey continues the Kona story while centering this case, the village and the people caught in the Brume’s effects.

Exploration moves between the damaged village and the wider countryside. Wooden shacks, nearby locations and lakes form a northern landscape that can be crossed on foot or by dog sled. The sled opens up longer stretches of travel across snowy ground and gives the player access to places beyond the settlement. The environment shapes the pace of investigation: distance, weather and the Brume complicate movement, while the village’s buildings invite close searches. Manastan is not just a backdrop to the mystery. Its layout connects isolated people and places, and travelling through it helps the player understand the scale of the disruption without reducing the region to a simple map of objectives.

Carl’s work as a detective gives the search a method. He can inspect objects, letters and documents, then consult his journal to keep track of what he has found. The player has to consider where a piece of evidence appears and what it may mean, instead of relying on constant directions. An omniscient storyteller accompanies the journey, adding narration as the story unfolds. This creates a distinctive point of view: Carl is investigating as a character, while the narration can frame his experience more broadly. Evidence gathers into a picture of the crisis, and careful reading helps connect details found in separate locations while leaving the central mystery unresolved.

The people Carl encounters give the disaster a human scale. Victims and survivors of the avalanche are stranded in the region, and their circumstances make the investigation more than an effort to identify an unexplained mist. Manastan’s disrupted routines and the difficulty of finding others deepen the sense of isolation, even when someone is nearby. Conversations and the objects people leave behind provide context for what has happened. The story follows Carl as he tries to understand the Brume and the circumstances surrounding those affected by it. The village’s residents are part of the place he is investigating, not simply markers on the way to another clue.

Survival is shaped by the cold, dangerous wildlife and troubling experiences associated with the Brume. A bitter blizzard can make travel hazardous, while threats in the landscape mean that investigation is not purely academic. The player must navigate exposed environments while continuing to reach locations and search them. These pressures make shelter and open snowfields feel different, and reinforce the cost of travelling farther from the village. The Brume remains central to the uncertainty: it has disrupted the balance of nature and disconnected Manastan from familiar reality. The mystery and the physical dangers are intertwined, so learning about the region takes place during a struggle to cross it. The change between a sheltered room and an exposed crossing affects how long the player can spend searching before continuing the journey. The same route can involve moving through open snow, reaching a lakeside location and then investigating a building for evidence. Travel and examination therefore alternate, with distance and weather influencing how the case unfolds across the region.

The experience shifts between travel, examination and encounters with other people. A player may search an interior, consider what its contents suggest, and then decide where the journey should lead next. The journal keeps Carl’s investigation close at hand, while the narration gives the unfolding story a different perspective from the clues themselves. Snow and mist provide a consistent visual frame, but the activities change with each destination. The player moves from sheltered rooms to open landscapes and back again, balancing attention to evidence with the need to keep moving. This varied pace gives the case a sense of place: the mystery belongs to a village and region that Carl has to traverse.

Kona II: Brume brings together a detective’s investigation and a survival journey through a region transformed by an unexplained mist. Carl follows evidence across buildings, lakes and snowbound routes, meets people left vulnerable by the avalanche, and faces the weather and wildlife along the way. The dog sled expands how he can move through the countryside, while the journal and narration shape how the case is understood. The Brume’s origins remain the question driving the story. Each place offers a different view of Manastan and its inhabitants, building a portrait of a community cut off from its familiar surroundings without giving away how Carl’s investigation ends.
