About Kena: Bridge of Spirits

Kena: Bridge of Spirits follows a young Spirit Guide travelling to an abandoned village and the Sacred Mountain Shrine. With the Rot, tiny spirits who help restore balance, she explores a forest marked by corruption, solves environmental puzzles and faces hostile spirits through staff, bow and Rot-powered abilities.

Kena is a young Spirit Guide whose work brings her to an abandoned village while she searches for the Sacred Mountain Shrine. Wandering spirits remain trapped in the place, and the forest around the settlement bears the effects of corruption. The journey connects action and exploration to Kena’s role: she helps spirits confront personal tragedies so they can move on, while uncovering what happened to the community. The story moves through a handful of focused regions around the village rather than a sprawling map, with paths opening as Kena gains tools and helps restore the land. The premise gives the adventure a clear destination, but much of its detail comes from the spirits and traces of the village encountered along the way.

The Rot are small, timid spirits scattered through the forest, and finding them grows Kena’s team. Ember Lab describes them as maintaining balance by decomposing dead and rotting elements; in play, they also interact with the world and support Kena in combat. Their presence changes what she can do: they can move or clear obstacles, interact with specific plants, and alter the environment so a route or puzzle can continue. They are not simply collectibles that add a number to a menu. Discovering them builds the group available to perform these tasks, while hats found around the world let players customize their appearance. Kena can also ask the Rot to carry out actions once she has the Courage needed in a fight, linking the companions’ environmental role with the rhythm of combat.

Exploration asks players to read the village and forest for routes, objects and signs of corruption. Kena’s staff serves as both a close-range weapon and, when transformed, a bow that can strike distant targets and interact with environmental mechanisms. Her spirit pulse can reveal or activate features, light dark spaces and help solve puzzles. Later tools extend those interactions: bombs can affect marked objects and enemies, while the Rot can gather around Forest Tears to form a moving mass that clears corruption, tends plants and helps with certain puzzles. These tools make progress depend on noticing how the environment responds, then applying an ability in the right place. Optional finds and Spirit Mail lead away from the main route, while restoring areas makes previously blocked spaces more accessible.

Combat combines staff strikes, ranged attacks and defensive timing. Kena can use light and heavy staff attacks, dodge, jump and raise a protective shield; a precisely timed block becomes a parry that can leave an enemy open. The staff’s bow form adds aimed shots, including opportunities to hit exposed weak points, and later bombs create another way to interrupt or damage foes. Enemies differ in how they attack and defend, so spacing and timing matter: a protected opponent may call for a stronger hit or a tool, while a distant target gives the bow a role. Fights can place multiple enemies together, making movement and target choice important. Clearing a corrupted encounter is part of opening the route through the affected area, tying combat to the broader task of restoring the village.

Rot abilities make Courage a second combat resource. Kena builds Courage by damaging enemies and collecting the energy they leave behind; spending it sends the Rot to perform actions such as binding a target, strengthening an attack or helping heal at a nearby flower. Those commands can control the fight as well as add damage, but they draw on a limited supply that must be replenished. Holding Courage for a healing flower means delaying an offensive Rot command; spending it to bind an enemy leaves less available for recovery. Kena therefore alternates between direct attacks that create openings and Rot actions that exploit them. The pulse also has a practical role here: it can call the Rot to collect Courage from the ground. Against larger foes, aiming at visible weak points with the bow can produce useful openings and energy, while the bomb can expose some protected targets. The systems reward switching tools according to what the enemy is doing.

Progression comes from exploration, combat and helping the Rot, rather than from a single experience bar. Karma earned through actions in the world unlocks skills for Kena, so optional discoveries and encounters can contribute to the abilities available for later fights. Rot discoveries also expand the team, and collectibles include hats that can be assigned to individual companions. The Anniversary Update adds a New Game+ option after completing the campaign, carrying unlocked abilities, upgrades, outfits and Rot into a run with redesigned combat encounters. It also adds Spirit Guide Trials accessed from the Mask Shrine: obstacle courses test the bow, bomb and dash, wave defences place Kena against successive enemy groups, and Boss Reflects let players revisit boss encounters. Trial rewards include outfits and, through bonus objectives, Charmstones that adjust Kena’s stats or abilities, sometimes pairing a benefit with a drawback.
