About Ghost of Tsushima DIRECTOR'S CUT
Jin Sakai fights to defend Tsushima after a Mongol invasion overwhelms its samurai defenders. He can meet enemies with the katana, bow, Ghost weapons or stealth, while exploring the island, helping its people and learning new techniques. The Director’s Cut also includes the separate Iki Island story expansion and the cooperative Legends mode.
Ghost of Tsushima is an open-world action adventure set during a Mongol invasion of feudal Japan. Jin Sakai, a samurai raised to follow his clan’s traditions, survives the defeat of the defenders on Tsushima and sets out to protect the island and its people. The crisis forces him to expand beyond the formal sword fighting he was taught, drawing on stealth and other tools as the conflict grows. Jin’s story follows this change in identity, while the people he meets give the invasion a local scale: villages need protection, allies have their own histories, and occupied places show the human cost of the campaign. The Director’s Cut brings Jin’s Tsushima campaign together with the Iki Island expansion and Legends cooperative mode.
Jin travels through Tsushima on horseback and on foot, following quests or responding to activity he encounters along the way. The island’s wind guides him toward a selected destination, and landmarks, animals and environmental cues invite detours without turning exploration into a list of mandatory steps. Foxes can lead him to Inari shrines, hot springs increase his health, and bamboo strikes test timed button inputs to expand his Resolve capacity. Shrines reached by climbing offer charms and wax wood used for bow upgrades. Liberating occupied locations and completing tales can reveal new people and rewards, while exploration techniques let the guiding wind point toward particular kinds of undiscovered places. The activities connect navigation with tangible upgrades, so a side route can change Jin’s health, equipment or available abilities.
Sword fights ask the player to watch enemy movements and choose when to defend, evade or attack. Holding guard blocks many strikes, while a precisely timed block becomes a parry that leaves an attacker open; a perfect parry, when unlocked, can stun and create a stronger counterattack. Dodging can also move Jin clear of an attack and leave an opponent vulnerable. Jin can switch among combat stances during a fight, each suited to a different enemy style: Stone is effective against swordsmen, Water against shield users, Wind against spearmen and Moon against brutes. Jin can change stances as enemies shift, using each style’s attacks to break the guard of its intended target. After it is unlocked through story progression, Ghost Stance can be triggered by filling its meter: killing a Mongol leader from stealth or defeating a string of enemies without taking damage builds momentum. Observing or defeating Mongol leaders at occupied camps earns progress toward new stances. In crowded encounters, enemy attacks can overlap, so identifying who is about to strike matters as much as choosing a target.

The katana remains Jin’s primary weapon, but ranged and thrown tools let him control the shape of an encounter. A Half Bow supports quicker shots, while the heavier Longbow can hit harder; kunai, smoke bombs and other Ghost weapons create openings, disrupt groups or help Jin escape notice. The player can approach a camp directly, begin with a standoff, thin enemies from range or use stealth to move through the compound unseen. The game does not lock Jin into one approach based on armor or a binary story choice: these styles remain available as the player develops. Armor sets and charms can be mixed to support different tactics, and a swordsmith can improve the katana’s combat power. Flowers gathered around the island can be exchanged for clothing dyes, keeping cosmetic choices separate from combat upgrades. Tales also award weapons or armor, giving optional character stories a practical role in preparation.
Resolve is a limited resource that links survival and decisive attacks. Jin earns it through skilled actions such as precise defense, and can spend it to heal or use powerful combat techniques. That creates a tactical trade-off: healing can keep him in a prolonged fight, while saving Resolve may allow a special strike when an enemy presents an opening. Progress through Jin’s Legend meter awards Technique Points, which unlock abilities in combat, defensive and exploration tracks. The upgrades broaden what he can do, from stronger counters and healing options to tools that help find points of interest. Gathered resources feed into specific upgrades. Bamboo, yew wood and wax wood are used by a bowyer to improve bow strength; predator hides are traded to trappers for increased ammunition capacity across ranged and quick-fire weapons. Supplies act as the general currency for purchases and upgrades. Vendors in towns can also raise the power of weapons and armor. Growth comes through a mixture of combat practice, quests and discoveries rather than a single numerical level.
Iki is a separate story expansion in the Director’s Cut. Jin encounters a Mongol force led by Ankhsar Khatun, known as the Eagle, on a lawless island shaped by raiders, criminals and memories of conflict. The island has its own locations, characters, tales and enemies, and Jin must work with or around its residents to confront the new threat. The expansion also explores the Sakai clan’s past without changing the main Tsushima campaign’s opening premise. Its encounters include pirates, smugglers, mad monks and haunted caves, and it adds new techniques for Jin to learn. These stories and activities make Iki a distinct chapter in his journey.

Legends is a separate cooperative mode inspired by Japanese folklore. Players choose Samurai, Ronin, Hunter or Assassin and join friends or online matchmaking for two-player story missions, four-player wave-based Survival, or competitive two-versus-two Rivals. These activities focus on class choices and team play rather than Jin’s single-player story. Kurosawa Mode presents the game with black-and-white imagery and film grain, paired with Japanese dialogue and English subtitles.
