About Dead Space (2023 remake)

Engineer Isaac Clarke joins a repair crew aboard the mining ship USG Ishimura, where a catastrophic outbreak has left the vessel in ruins and his partner Nicole missing. This 2023 ground-up remake follows his effort to survive Necromorph attacks, restore damaged ship systems and uncover what happened to the crew.

Dead Space (2023) is Motive Studio and Electronic Arts’ ground-up remake of the 2008 survival-horror game, rebuilt in Frostbite while keeping its central story and structure. Engineer Isaac Clarke travels aboard the USG Kellion to answer a distress call from the USG Ishimura, a vast ship built to mine planets. The repair mission turns into an emergency when the crew is found slaughtered and Isaac’s partner Nicole is missing. With communications failing and hostile Necromorphs moving through the ship, Isaac has to work out what broke aboard the Ishimura while staying alive. This remake gives Isaac a speaking role and expands the parts played by some supporting characters, but it remains focused on one engineer trying to repair a damaged vessel and find Nicole amid a spreading crisis.

The Ishimura is both the setting and the structure of the campaign. Its habitation areas, medical facilities, engineering decks and industrial spaces connect into a single ship that players can revisit as access routes open. Objectives send Isaac between locations to restore power, restart equipment, clear obstructions or use the ship’s systems to reach the next part of the investigation. The remake removes loading screens and camera cuts between these spaces, and its map and locator help orient the player without turning the vessel into a list of isolated levels. The locator can point toward an active objective through the connected corridors, while the player still has to navigate each room and whatever dangers have appeared there. Returning to earlier rooms can reveal new routes and narrative side missions, including material about Nicole and other members of the crew. Crew logs, environmental details and conversations with survivors gradually fill in the disaster’s human and technical context.

Combat treats Isaac’s equipment as industrial tools adapted for emergency defense. The Plasma Cutter and other weapons are used to sever Necromorph limbs, because damaging a creature’s body is not simply a matter of firing until its health is gone. Motive’s remake adds a Peeling System: impacts expose layers of flesh, tendons and bone, giving visible feedback about damage and helping the player judge whether to keep attacking the same limb or change tactics. Isaac can also use Stasis to slow a threat and Kinesis to move objects, abilities that work in combat as well as in the environment. Encounters therefore involve selecting a tool, reading how an enemy is responding and using a brief opening to create space before another attack arrives.

Exploration repeatedly folds into practical problem solving. Isaac is an engineer, so objectives often involve making malfunctioning machinery useful again: tracing a fault, finding a way through a blocked section, or manipulating power and other ship systems while threats remain nearby. The same equipment used to fight can help interact with the environment, and the RIG interface brings the map, current objectives and database into view. In zero gravity, movement shifts from walking along a corridor to taking off and steering freely around a space; the remake gives these sections broader three-dimensional movement than the 2008 game. Some routes can now be approached from different directions, making navigation through the Ishimura part of the task rather than a transition between fights.

The remake’s ship-wide structure supports an ongoing loop of following an objective, crossing dangerous rooms, gathering information and equipment, then deciding whether a return trip is worth the risk. The Intensity Director changes events as Isaac moves through both new and previously visited areas, varying encounters and environmental disturbances rather than relying on a completely fixed sequence each time. The system can combine audio, lighting, fog or steam, and enemy appearances, while adjusting the pace so that a tense room may be followed by a quieter stretch. A familiar vent sound might signal a creature, or leave the player waiting for one that never arrives. Damaged lighting and sudden changes in a known passage make the same route demand fresh attention. Isaac’s breathing, heartbeat and exertion also respond to his stress, providing another cue to his physical and emotional condition. These systems sit alongside the main campaign: the player is still repairing the Ishimura and searching for Nicole, but the route between those goals can change in its immediate pressures.

Isaac can improve his equipment at workbenches scattered through the Ishimura. Power Nodes found on the ship are spent along upgrade paths for his suit and weapons, increasing capabilities such as health, weapon damage, ammunition capacity or Stasis effectiveness. Because a node spent on one path is unavailable for another, upgrades involve choosing which tool or defensive capacity needs help most. Some new paths open as Isaac acquires further equipment, giving a reason to examine rooms and supplies closely on return visits. This progression sits beside the campaign’s repair tasks: surviving a Necromorph encounter may depend on precise shots and Stasis, while the next stretch may demand enough suit protection or ammunition to cross an unfamiliar deck. Building up the RIG and arsenal makes Isaac more capable without turning the Ishimura into a safe place.
