About Cassette Beasts

Stranded on New Wirral, a remote island filled with unusual creatures, the player records monsters onto cassette tapes and transforms into them for turn-based battles. Exploration, partner relationships and fusion connect the search for a way home with an open world of puzzles, dungeons and Ranger duties.

Cassette Beasts begins with the player arriving on New Wirral, a remote island that seems to belong to another world. The island is home to strange beasts as well as people who have built a community around surviving their attacks. Kayleigh, a Ranger, brings the newcomer to Harbourtown and introduces the routines that make life there possible. The larger problem is how to leave: the island’s Archangels are connected to finding a way back to the player’s home world. That search gives the journey a direction, while the inhabited town and the wilderness around it create a practical reason to learn how local people travel, fight and help one another.

The central transformation system turns monster encounters into a way to expand the player’s abilities. Residents record beasts onto cassette tapes; playing a recording lets a character take that creature’s form in battle. A recorded form is therefore both a combat choice and a source of powers that can be carried into exploration. The player travels with a human partner, while tapes provide the forms used when danger calls for a fight. This structure ties collecting to use: each new recording adds a form that can be selected for different encounters and situations. The island’s threats make recording and preparing tapes part of ordinary travel and give the collection a practical purpose.

New Wirral is designed as an open world to cross on foot and with abilities gained from monster forms. Some of these powers work while the character is human, opening ways to move through the environment and interact with obstacles. The listed actions include gliding, flying, swimming, climbing, dashing and becoming magnetic. They let exploration branch into movement challenges, puzzles and dungeon entrances, so a route can depend on which traversal ability is available. Finding and recording creatures consequently affects more than battle preparation: new forms can change how the player reaches places and investigates the island. The same landscape serves as a space for travel, discovery and encounters with the beings that make New Wirral dangerous.

Battles are turn-based, with the player choosing attacks for the active monster forms. Elemental chemistry adds effects around those attacks: a move can apply an extra buff or debuff, and interactions can even change an opponent’s elemental type. This makes the system more involved than selecting a damaging move, because the resulting status and type can alter the position of a later action. The available forms and moves give the player different ways to approach a fight, while the partner system means battles are built around two characters working together. The design asks players to pay attention to the state of a battle as well as the strengths of the forms they have recorded, then use those pieces together to manage the next exchange.

A companion is part of the adventure and of the combat setup, not merely a guide who appears between battles. The player can spend time with a selected partner and help them complete personal goals. As the relationship develops, the pair’s ability to fuse improves. During battle, while transformed, the player and companion can combine their monster forms into a new fusion; any pair of forms can produce a distinct, fully animated result. This gives the same recorded roster another layer of choice, since a fusion depends on both the forms brought into the fight and the bond with the companion. The personal goals give those relationships their own progression, while fusion connects that progression to the tactical options available when a difficult enemy appears.

Harbourtown’s Rangers support the settlement by maintaining the town, managing supplies and deliveries, and keeping important routes safe. The Ranger Captains handle more dangerous problems and train recruits through battles. Each of the twelve Captains favours a different strategy, so those encounters test whether the player has prepared a response rather than relying on one approach throughout. Ranger Leader Ianthe oversees the organisation, while Wilma distributes scarce items and upgrades from the Harbourtown headquarters as the player’s training advances. The Ranger structure turns the community’s needs into a progression path: learning how to fight is tied to earning trust and access to resources that help confront the Archangels. Beyond the Captains, Rogue Fusions are unusually strong beasts formed by monsters fusing in the wild.

The core journey can also extend into activities beyond the search for a way home. A never-ending Gauntlet mode pits the player against continuing waves of enemies for materials and glory, giving the battle system a repeatable challenge outside the island’s ordinary routes. After the story, the game unlocks additional modes, including permadeath and forms of randomisation. Multiplayer adds another way to play: local co-op lets a friend explore, transform and fight alongside the player, while online play supports trading monster tapes, one-on-one battles and cooperative fights against Rogue Fusions. These options widen the uses of the same recording, battle and partner systems without changing the central setting of New Wirral.
