About Broforce
Broforce is a side-scrolling run-and-gun action game about a paramilitary team sent to confront terrorist forces. Move through destructible stages, free captured comrades, and reach each mission’s exit while a rotating cast of heroes brings different weapons and special attacks to the fight.
Broforce frames its campaign as a string of action-film rescue missions. The player controls members of an under-funded, overpowered paramilitary organisation sent to confront terrorist forces around the world. A stage is a side-scrolling run-and-gun route through occupied territory: fight through enemy positions, free captured allies, confront the mission’s major threat where one appears, and make for the extraction point. The setup is deliberately broad and comic, turning the language of action cinema into the game’s central premise. Rather than pause for a detailed political or military story, the campaign keeps the focus on moving across a dangerous landscape and getting the team out. Its updated campaign also includes additional unlocks and challenge content through the Broforce Forever update.
The changing roster is part of the action system, rather than a menu of characters selected before every level. Broforce begins a stage with a randomly assigned hero from the available cast; rescuing a caged prisoner grants an extra life and changes the hero under the player’s control. Each Bro has distinct weaponry and a special attack, so a rescue can be both a reward and a sudden change in how to handle the next group of enemies. Ranged fire, explosives, close attacks and character-specific abilities give the roster different ways to break a route open. Rescuing more prisoners also unlocks additional Bros for the pool, expanding the set of possible loadouts over the campaign. The rescue is not a conventional permanent upgrade: because the new assignment is random, an extra life does not guarantee a preferred weapon. It can also replace a hero whose current attack suits the surrounding enemies, so prisoners create a small tradeoff between preserving a useful matchup and gaining another life. The result is a loop where freeing people supports survival and steadily broadens the team, while keeping the immediate weapon choice unpredictable.
Combat takes place in levels whose terrain can be destroyed. Shots, special attacks and explosive objects can tear through the ground and structures, changing the shape of the route as the fight unfolds. A barrier may stop being cover after a burst of fire, while a blast can open a drop or clear a cluster of enemies; the same damage can also remove a platform or create a hazard under the player. Exploding barrels are especially volatile, and the game’s chain reactions can spread fire, napalm and debris across a crowded section. The explosions therefore affect both sides of an encounter: they can clear a firing position, but the collapsing ground and spreading blast can also cut off a path or catch nearby allies in co-op. This makes movement through a stage more than a matter of following a fixed corridor. The player can attack through an obstruction, use the destruction to reach another level of the terrain, or take a safer route while the environment continues to break apart.

Broforce’s campaign runs on compact, repeated mission beats, but the available hero and the destructible layout change how each beat plays. The player pushes toward the exit while dealing with armed opponents, rescuing prisoners when possible and responding to larger encounters. Some stages introduce a major enemy or a different movement challenge, while the surrounding structures create opportunities for a direct assault or a rougher, more circuitous path. Because the selected Bro can change during a level, success depends on using the weapon and special attack currently available instead of relying on one permanent build. Destroying part of the stage can reveal a shortcut, but it may also remove the ground that made a jump or retreat possible. In cooperative play, the same levels support as many as four players, bringing several characters and attacks into the same volatile space.
Other modes shift the purpose of the destruction. Bro-Op supports cooperative runs, while Deathmatch lets players compete against one another across several competitive modes. Explosion Run is a time-attack format for co-op, with players racing through terrain that is itself exploding; the pressure comes from keeping the group moving through the route as it collapses. These modes draw on the same broad action vocabulary as the campaign—movement, weapons, destructible surroundings and quick reactions—but set different goals around it. The range of formats gives the roster and level systems uses beyond progressing through the central rescue campaign, without changing the game’s focus on short bursts of side-scrolling combat.
The Broforce Forever update adds another layer to the campaign through its Muscle Temples. These challenge levels put Indiana Brones through a perilous temple with a designated Threat Level, enemy types and hazards. Completing a temple unlocks one of four flexes, which can then be used by any Bro. The update also adds six Bros, among them Seth Brondle, Xebro, Desperabro, Bro Gummer and Demolition Bro, whose distinct attacks include a flying chakram, a rifle and freeze grenades. New opposition includes motorbike maniacs, machine-gun placements, barbed wire, sandbags and bazooka-carrying blimps. These additions belong to the current expanded game: they bring new unlocks and challenge stages into the campaign while keeping its central pattern of rescuing heroes, adapting to their abilities and fighting through destructible territory.
