About Blood West

Blood West is a first-person stealth shooter set in a cursed frontier where an Undead Gunslinger searches for a way to free his soul. Explore three open-ended regions, take missions from their strange inhabitants, and choose between quiet ambushes and direct gunfights while building a character through perks, weapons, and occult artifacts.

Blood West turns the frontier into the Barren Lands, a Western landscape corrupted by a curse that twists living things, defiles the terrain, and draws restless spirits and demons into the open. The player is the Undead Gunslinger, a corpse returned to motion and left to roam until the curse can be purged and his soul released. A local Shaman finds the Gunslinger’s body and attempts to give it a proper burial, but the curse has already taken hold. From there, the story follows a damnation rather than a conventional redemption arc, with the gunslinger crossing a low-resolution world where familiar frontier imagery sits alongside occult magic and unnatural creatures.

The base game unfolds across three open-ended scenarios: the Canyons, the Swamp, and the Mountains. Each region is a broad space to explore at the player’s pace, with hostile monsters, demons, settlements, landmarks, and hidden stashes spread through the landscape. The route between objectives is not reduced to a guided corridor; players can scout the terrain, spot a fort or town, and decide how to approach it. Maps can be bought from vendors, while exploration reveals additional places and useful supplies. Moving between these distinct environments gives the larger curse a changing frontier to occupy, from exposed dry country to marshland and high ground.

Stealth is central to how encounters begin. The player can watch enemy positions, use cover, and approach from a concealed angle before committing to a takedown. An awareness meter indicates whether a creature can see or hear the Gunslinger; movement and visibility can fill that meter, turning a quiet approach into a chase if the enemy becomes alert. A knife at close range or an arrow from a distance can remove a target without drawing the attention that a firearm may attract. Distractions help redirect enemies and create openings. The goal is not simply to avoid combat: choosing where to strike and what nearby enemies can detect shapes the next fight and how much ammunition it costs.

When stealth breaks or a direct attack suits the situation, Blood West offers a broad arsenal. Revolvers, rifles, shotguns, and carbines cover different firearm roles, while knives, axes, and bows provide quieter ways to fight. Some weapons carry magical properties or a supernatural presence, and explosives or incendiaries can affect groups when a single shot is not enough. Enemies have different weaknesses, so a weapon choice can matter as much as aim. The Gunslinger also manages healing items, medical tinctures, and other consumables gathered on the journey. A dedicated stash crate holds rare items for later, while arcane artifacts can be slotted to change the character’s abilities and the way a loadout performs.

Character growth comes from experience and a perk-based skill tree. Killing enemies and completing quests both contribute to that growth, giving exploration a payoff beyond the supplies found along the way. Skill points can be invested toward different combat identities, such as a stealth hunter, a revolver-focused gunman, or a melee fighter who presses attacks at close range. Some perks improve firearm accuracy or make melee swings cost less stamina. The bonuses apply to specific actions and weapon styles, so the player’s chosen perks influence how they handle later encounters. Artifacts add another layer: these objects are discovered in the scenarios and grant additional abilities when equipped. Combining a perk path with artifacts and a weapon selection makes progression a series of practical choices about how to approach threats, rather than a single fixed class that dictates every encounter.

The regions are also inhabited by fully voiced characters who have their own stories and needs. Some offer missions, and how the Gunslinger treats them can affect whether they reward him, become allies, or turn hostile. The game leaves room to discover these relationships through exploration rather than explaining every objective in advance. Quests, landmarks, vendors, and hidden caches all pull the player away from a straight line through the environment. The Swamp and Mountains broaden the journey beyond the initial canyon frontier, while the people and otherworldly residents encountered in each place connect local errands to the larger effort to purge the curse. Their requests make exploration serve both survival and narrative progress.

The Barren Lands' inhabitants make those approaches feel different from one encounter to the next. Pistol-carrying birdmen can answer a distant shot, while coffin zombies use their makeshift resting places as armour. A masked figure may look almost human until the disguise breaks, and spirits bring another kind of threat into a settlement or stretch of wilderness. Watching what an enemy carries and how it moves becomes useful before spending ammunition or walking into its sightline. The game's difficulty can also be adjusted, so the same three regions can be approached with a different level of combat pressure. The setting's horror comes from these unsettling meetings as much as from the curse hanging over the land.
