Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is an open-world action adventure developed by Massive Entertainment, a Ubisoft studio, in collaboration with Lightstorm Entertainment and Disney. It takes place on the Western Frontier, a region of Pandora outside the central locations of the films. The player character is a Na’vi abducted as an infant by the Resources Development Administration and raised through its Ambassador Program to serve human interests. After awakening years later, the character is unfamiliar with the home world and must learn about Na’vi identity and life among the clans. This position shapes the journey: the protagonist is native to Pandora by birth, but has to rebuild a connection to its people, customs and environment. The main story is a standalone adventure in the Avatar setting, with the RDA and its industrial presence providing the central conflict.
The Western Frontier is explored through a first-person perspective, with a third-person option added in a later update. Movement draws on the Na’vi character’s height and agility: forests, roots, vines and elevated terrain offer routes that can be climbed, leapt across or traversed at speed. The regions include different ecosystems and large natural landmarks, so discovering a route often involves reading the surrounding terrain rather than following a narrow corridor. Na’vi Senses help identify points of interest, enemies, creatures and gatherable materials. The game also uses written directions and landmarks to guide travel, giving players a way to follow clues about a destination. These systems support a rhythm of traveling toward a mission, noticing something useful nearby, and choosing whether to continue directly or explore.
The main character works with resistance members and meets Na’vi clans while opposing the RDA’s occupation. Helping local people and confronting the corporation are connected activities: missions introduce the conflict, while outposts and industrial sites give the player concrete targets within the landscape. Enemy bases can be approached through stealth, using cover and movement to avoid drawing an alarm, or through more direct fighting with human weapons and Na’vi tools. The RDA deploys soldiers and amplified mobility platforms, creating different threats within combat spaces. As the player’s equipment and skills improve, the range of possible confrontations expands. The story also includes investigative tasks in which Na’vi abilities are used to examine a scene, inspect evidence and connect clues, following the character’s developing role as a tracker in an unfamiliar homeland.

Hunting and gathering feed into the equipment and cooking systems. Plants, tree materials and animal products can be collected in the wild and used to make weapons, armor and meals. Quality matters: materials collected under suitable conditions or obtained through careful hunting can provide better crafting results. Na’vi Senses can help assess nearby resources, while the Hunter’s Guide records information useful for finding particular ingredients. Gathering itself involves attention to the object and the way it is harvested; pulling a plant or bark carefully can produce a pristine resource. Recipes turn these finds into practical improvements, such as stronger weapons or gear that raises the character’s resilience. Food provides another use for gathered ingredients, with meals granting temporary benefits. This makes the time spent learning the environment feed directly into preparation for later missions and fights.
Progression develops the Na’vi through skill trees, equipment and connections to Pandora. Skills can be invested in different aspects of the character, letting the player improve combat, survival or other capabilities according to the challenges they face. Rare Tarsyu plants connect the protagonist with ancestral skills, adding abilities beyond the ordinary skill-point path. Crafting offers another route to greater effectiveness: finding stronger materials and making improved equipment can raise damage or health-related values, allowing the player to face tougher enemies. The ikran, a flying mount, adds a major traversal option after it becomes available. Riding lets the player cross long distances through the air and reach heights inaccessible on foot, while the creature also has its own development path. Together, these systems make exploration, gathering and combat preparation mutually supportive parts of the campaign.
The world changes in visible ways when the player disrupts RDA operations. Industrial facilities pollute surrounding areas, harming the local ecosystem and making resources unusable. Clearing an outpost can therefore serve both as a combat objective and as a way to reclaim the land around it. As pollution is removed, the affected environment can recover, reconnecting resistance activity with the health of Pandora rather than treating every encounter as an isolated fight. The player can alternate between story missions, clan-related tasks, exploring new regions and targeting RDA installations. This gives the campaign a loop in which information leads to travel, travel supports gathering and crafting, and improved equipment helps with missions or hostile sites. The Na’vi protagonist’s relationship with the world is expressed through these practical systems as well as through the story.

After completing the main story, New Game+ allows another playthrough with gear and skills carried over from the finished run. The mode introduces stronger enemies, higher-level equipment and a new Sarentu skill tree, changing the demands of the familiar campaign. Perspective options and other updates also shape the current version of the game: players can choose first- or third-person play, with the perspective available during ordinary exploration and combat. The base game is separate from its story expansions, including The Sky Breaker and Secrets of the Spires, and from the later From the Ashes expansion, which features So’lek. These additions broaden the larger product, while the core game remains focused on the rescued Na’vi’s reconnection with the Western Frontier, its clans and its living environment.
