About Afterimage

Afterimage is a hand-drawn 2D action-adventure set in Engardin, a fantasy world damaged by conflict between humanity and its Goliaths. Renee survives an attack on her settlement and travels to find her mentor and recover her memories, exploring connected regions, fighting enemies and developing a flexible arsenal.

Afterimage takes place in Engardin, a world created by a deity who left behind four Goliaths to uphold its order. Humanity’s ambitions eventually led to a prolonged war with them. A catastrophe called the Razing devastated the human Holy Grounds, ended the conflict and disrupted the world’s divine order. The remaining people settled in scattered communities, unable to rely on the reincarnation cycle that had sustained life. Years later, mystic forces assault Renee’s village. She survives while her mentor Aros is missing, and sets out to recover her memories and find him. Her journey connects a personal search with the wider history of Engardin, as actions along the way can affect the world’s fate. These events provide the background to a broad exploration adventure.

Renee explores an interconnected 2D landscape of settlements, ruins and dangerous natural spaces. The path is non-linear: players can uncover areas in different orders, find routes that join previously visited places and return when new abilities allow progress. More than fifty non-player characters inhabit the world, with individual stories and purposes, and side quests reveal how local communities fit into Engardin’s history. Hidden treasures and secrets reward careful exploration, while corrupted creatures and traps make travel hazardous. The routine moves between navigating unfamiliar terrain, speaking with characters, fighting through an obstacle and deciding which direction to pursue. The map is not only a backdrop for Renee’s search; its connections are part of the challenge. Visiting places and meeting inhabitants adds context and may suggest new leads.

Combat uses a range of weapons and abilities that can be developed into different character builds. The arsenal includes six main weapon classes as well as sub-weapons, armor and accessories, allowing players to emphasize different attack patterns and equipment combinations. Defeated enemies provide power that can be channeled to unlock skills and improve weapons. Talent points can be invested in stat upgrades and unique weapon skills, combining general character growth with moves tied to particular weapon types. Players can switch equipment to respond to different encounters rather than commit to one tool for the entire adventure. Bosses and ordinary enemies test these choices in different ways, while the interconnected map gives combat progress consequences beyond the next fight. Equipment variety lets the player adapt a build as options appear.

Exploration skills connect combat and traversal. Renee discovers abilities and Afterimages that grant benefits during exploration or combat, and some skills open passages, shortcuts or access to other parts of the world. An ability found in one region may change how the player approaches a later obstacle or make a familiar route more efficient. This gives backtracking a practical purpose: revisit landmarks that were inaccessible, search for paths above or below the main route, and use movement options to reach items or continue a quest. The player must judge when to explore and when to follow a character’s lead, because side quests and environmental discoveries can reveal directions without replacing the main search for Aros. New abilities expand the map and add options in encounters.

Engardin’s inhabitants offer more than exposition. Its communities are shaped by the upheaval that followed the Razing, and conversations and quests add local context to the larger history. Meeting a character can lead to a task that sends Renee into a nearby area, where the player may encounter new enemies, find a useful item or unlock another conversation. These activities connect narrative and exploration: the player learns about the world by moving through it and interacting with the people who remain. The quest structure also feeds into multiple endings, which depend on Renee’s actions. The official store description establishes that outcomes can change Engardin’s future, but details of those endings are left out here. The journey stays grounded in Renee’s search for Aros and the gradual understanding of the catastrophe.

Afterimage’s progression is broad rather than tied to a single weapon or linear upgrade track. Players collect equipment from six weapon classes, grow stats, learn class-specific skills and gain abilities that assist traversal. The game includes more than two hundred pieces of equipment, including weapons, sub-weapons, armor and accessories. This variety lets players adjust a build as options appear, balancing attack style and supporting gear against the demands of a region or boss. Hand-drawn animation and changing environments accompany the systems-driven journey, while the orchestral soundtrack supplies a consistent frame for its locations. The central task remains choosing how to equip Renee and where to take her next. Skills and equipment combine with route-finding to give players several ways to prepare.

Post-launch changes affect the practical experience. An early patch made fast travel available from the beginning, changed the map so locations reveal after first visits and adjusted carrying limits and prices of health and magic potions. The update also made some weapon skills available earlier. These were launch-version updates, not a separate edition or sequel. Across the adventure, players explore Engardin, fight its creatures, develop Renee’s skills and follow quests intersecting her search for Aros. The connected structure allows routes to open over time, while the ending system makes actions part of the world’s resolution.
