The Key

Full episode spoilers.

Norway's kings and jarls arrive for Olaf's election. Thorkell questions why they should surrender power to another ruler, and Bjorn accepts that others may stand against him. He wants the crown to carry genuine support. As the rulers gather on a circular platform to cast their votes, Olaf openly backs Bjorn and Harald also votes for him. The episode leaves the result unresolved, with Harald quietly seeking support of his own.

Gunnhild reaches Lagertha's village and learns that Hali is dead. Lagertha blames herself for failing to protect him, but they still have Asa and the remaining villagers to defend. Together the women prepare barricades and weapons for another bandit attack. In Kattegat, Hvitserk has an iron door brought to his dwelling in an attempt to keep his tormentors out. His visions continue, including Thora demanding that he avenge her by killing Ivar.

Ivar and Igor help Dir escape from his cage after a distraction draws the guards away. They guide him to transport outside the walls, gaining a potential ally against Oleg. At dinner, Oleg displays a guard's severed head as punishment for the escape and presents Katia, the woman he intends to marry. Ivar is shaken by her resemblance to Freydis. He questions her about the wife he killed, but receives no explanation that resolves what he is seeing.
