After Bjorn's failed attack, Olaf changes the terms of the confrontation. He proposes that the rulers of Norway elect one king and suggests Bjorn for the position. Harald is released and joins the discussion, although the proposal places Bjorn ahead of his own ambition. Bjorn also questions Kjetill about Iceland. Kjetill admits killing Eyvind's family but denies responsibility for Floki's disappearance, leaving Bjorn unconvinced.
Lagertha organises the villagers to resist the returning bandits. Women and older men prepare to fight, while children take lookout and archery positions. The defenders drive the raiders back, but Hali comes out into the open before the danger has passed. White Hair kills him. Lagertha holds her grandson as he dies and reassures him about Valhalla. The village survives the attack, but the bandits remain a threat and the family has suffered a loss.
In Kattegat, Hvitserk fails to take up the trade mission Ubbe offered him. Gunnhild's disturbing dream prompts her to ride toward Lagertha's settlement, while Ubbe insists that he and Torvi must stay to fulfil their responsibilities. In Rus, Ivar tells Igor that the lands around him belong to him rather than Oleg. He also visits the imprisoned Dir, bringing food and raising the possibility of escape. When Dir offers rewards for help, Ivar makes clear that he wants Oleg overthrown.
