Cooper refuses Audrey's invitation to become romantically involved and offers to listen to her problems instead. The murder inquiry now requires a visit to One Eyed Jacks, where Jacques Renault works. Cooper and Ed prepare to cross the border undercover as wealthy gamblers, relying on the Bookhouse Boys because their official authority does not extend into Canada. Waldo could supply another account of Laura's last night, but Leo hears about the bird over his police radio and shoots it through the station window. Cooper's recorder captures its repeated cries before the killing, including words that place Leo in a frightening scene with Laura.
Audrey pursues a separate route into the same club. After searching Emory Battis's office and overhearing his arrangements with a shop assistant, she learns how department-store employees are recruited. She applies under another name and persuades Blackie to hire her. Donna, James and Maddy discover that one of Laura's recordings for Jacoby is missing. They plan to lure him away by dressing Maddy as Laura, while Bobby plants cocaine in James's motorcycle. Catherine learns that Ben and Josie are beneficiaries of a policy on her life, exposing the danger behind their mill dealings. By night, Cooper reaches Jacques's blackjack table and Audrey has entered the brothel, each investigating without knowing the other's full position.
