Rust and Marty follow Dora Lange's religious connections to a revival service conducted by Joel Theriot. Their disagreement about the preacher's message continues their familiar argument over what people need to believe. The interview produces a more practical lead: Dora was seen with a tall man whose face appeared scarred. The description gives them someone to look for, but it does not establish his name or his role in her death.
Marty's efforts to control his private life become increasingly ugly. He resents finding Rust at his house with Maggie after Rust has mowed the lawn. On a double date intended to introduce Rust to Maggie's friend, Marty notices Lisa with another man. He later intrudes into Lisa's apartment and threatens her companion. At home, concern about his daughter's drawings adds to the strain, while Maggie challenges how little attention he gives the family.
Rust searches older death records for the pattern he suspects. A photograph of Rianne Olivier reveals a spiral resembling the mark associated with Dora. Rianne's grandfather identifies her former boyfriend as Reggie Ledoux, and the detectives learn that she attended the Tuttle-funded Light of the Way school. A radio report supplies the next connection: Ledoux shared a prison cell with Charlie Lange. The partners issue a bulletin for him, while the episode's final glimpse shows the wanted man outside, wearing a gas mask.
