Charlie Lange gives Rust and Marty a way into Reggie Ledoux's world. He recalls Ledoux talking about powerful men, the Yellow King and Carcosa, then names an associate who might know where to find him. Marty tracks that contact through a crowded club and learns that Ledoux supplies the Iron Crusaders, a Texas biker gang. Rust knows the gang from his former undercover life and decides to revive his old identity.
Marty is also losing control of his marriage. After he tries to dismiss Lisa's anger, she tells Maggie about their affair. He comes home to packed clothes and an empty house, then causes a drunken scene at Maggie's workplace. Rust retrieves him and later speaks with Maggie, but the case keeps pulling the partners away from any honest repair. To reach the bikers, Rust takes leave under the false explanation that he is visiting his sick father.
Rust reconnects with Ginger and offers a drug deal as a reason to meet the gang's supplier. Ginger demands that he first join a robbery. The raid collapses into gunfire, leaving Rust to move through houses, yards and fences while dragging Ginger out with him. Marty collects them in the car as police converge on the neighbourhood. They have escaped with a contact who may lead them to Ledoux, at the cost of an illegal operation neither can acknowledge in his official account.
