Seeing Things

Contains spoilers for this episode and earlier episodes.

Dora Lange's final movements send Rust and Marty from her mother's home to people who knew her outside the family. Her mother says Dora had begun attending church, while another acquaintance points toward a remote place called the Ranch. The detectives need those leads quickly: a new task force threatens to take the murder away from them, and Marty secures only a short extension for their own investigation.

At the Ranch, a young woman named Beth hands over Dora's belongings. Her diary contains references to the Yellow King and Carcosa, giving Rust names to pursue without explaining what they mean. Marty objects to Beth being employed there while she is underage and gives her money to leave. His concern for her sits beside his own affair with Lisa, whose interest in dating other men brings out his jealousy. Rust notices the dishonesty and does little to spare Marty's feelings.

The later interviews reveal more of Rust's earlier undercover work, the violence he survived and the hallucinations that followed his heavy drug exposure. Marty still acknowledges his partner's skill despite their friction. Back in 1995, the search for Dora's church ends at a burned building. Inside, the partners discover an image of a woman wearing antlers, posed like Dora. The church lead therefore ends with another resemblance to the crime scene rather than a witness who can explain it.
