Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri keep moving as hired killers follow the princess across the Continent. Between escapes, Yennefer teaches Ciri to use her magic and sends Geralt letters about their progress. A secluded house supplied by Yarpen gives them time to live together with something approaching ordinary family routines. Their visit to the Belleteyn festival ends when a jackapace attacks Ciri. Geralt kills it, but Rience's use of her stolen blood means another hiding place will not solve the pursuit.
They decide to make Ciri visible on their own terms, travelling with Yarpen's caravan to draw Rience into an ambush at Shaerrawedd. The plan attracts elves as well as the fire mage. Geralt and Yennefer fight to protect Ciri and the dwarves while the rival groups collide around the ruins. Yennefer holds Rience's portal open long enough for Geralt to follow him and break his hands. The mage still escapes, and Francesca loses her brother Gage in the battle.
The portal's strength convinces Yennefer that someone more powerful is helping Rience. She wants to take Ciri to Aretuza, where Tissaia and the Brotherhood may help train and protect her. Geralt will continue hunting the mage so he cannot keep tracking the girl. The three say goodbye after the brief life they managed to share, separating while the threat to Ciri remains active.
