Henry tries to secure a French marriage for Elizabeth while Cromwell's inquiries into religious houses push the break with Rome into their property and income. At a court performance, Henry gives Brandon responsibility for entertaining the French admiral. Anne objects and suggests her father should have the duty, but Henry confirms his trust in Brandon in front of her. The exchange leaves Brandon angry and Anne publicly corrected. Chapuys takes the opportunity to discuss Catherine's suffering and Mary's danger with him. At Hatfield, Mary responds to Elizabeth's cries by comforting her sister, although Lady Bryan immediately takes the baby back when she finds them together.
The French negotiations fail to deliver the match Henry expects. Francis has left himself other options, and the rejection exposes how little control Henry has over a foreign king's family. Anne's questions about Henry's mistresses then drive their own conversation into an argument. Brandon also tries to repair damage to his marriage after returning to his old behaviour, giving Henry someone with whom to discuss disappointment at home. Walking by the pond, Henry remembers his conversations with More and admits regret over his death. He then turns that regret towards Anne, looking at her as the person responsible for what he chose to do. Henry throws More's crucifix into the water, and Anne walks away alone.
