Season 5

Season synopsis

Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.

Pam leaves for art school in New York, and Jim faces a long-distance relationship while Scranton competes in a weight-loss challenge. He proposes in the rain at a motorway rest stop, and she accepts. Michael and Holly begin dating, but corporate transfers her to Nashua and they cannot make the distance work. Toby returns to HR. Pam fails a class and chooses to come home rather than extend her time away from Jim.

Angela keeps seeing Dwight while engaged to Andy. Michael tells Andy about the affair, and Andy and Dwight settle their rivalry in a parking-lot duel; Andy’s wedding plans collapse. After Charles Miner arrives as a strict new vice president, Michael quits rather than accept his authority. Pam joins him in starting the Michael Scott Paper Company, and Ryan later takes a job there. Their tiny workspace and low prices bring customers but leave the company short of cash; Dwight stays loyal to Dunder Mifflin, turning Michael’s effort to take his accounts into a fight between friends.

Michael negotiates a buyout that restores his management job and secures jobs for Pam and Ryan. Pam becomes a salesperson, and Erin takes the reception desk. Jim and Pam consider slipping away to get married during Michael's Café Disco, but decide to wait. At the company picnic, Michael and Holly's comedy skit accidentally reveals plans to close the Buffalo branch. Pam excels in the volleyball tournament until an ankle injury sends her and Jim to hospital, where they discover she is pregnant.
