Season 8

Season synopsis

Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.

Season 8 begins after Specter Litt merges with Robert Zane’s firm, forming Zane Specter Litt. Harvey gives Robert the managing-partner role, but their agreement frays when both have promised a name partnership to a protégé: Harvey backed Alex Williams, while Robert brought in Samantha Wheeler. Alex and Samantha compete fiercely, and their mentors’ loyalties deepen the split. Louis eventually takes over as managing partner and promotes both lawyers, changing the firm’s name to Zane Specter Litt Wheeler Williams and restoring a measure of unity.

That peace is tested when Harvey’s client Simon Lowe makes a conflicted deal with Alex’s client Thomas Kessler, who is dating Donna. Harvey tells Donna enough to keep Thomas from being harmed, and she warns Thomas, causing him to withdraw. Simon sues the firm for breaking client privilege and hires Daniel Hardman, who uses the case to pursue Harvey’s disbarment. Harvey refuses to blame Donna, so Robert takes responsibility at the ethics hearing, protecting Harvey’s license at the cost of his own career and sending himself into retirement. Robert’s choice also answers his guilt over having fabricated evidence against a man who mugged Samantha years earlier; that man later died in prison.

Samantha must reckon with losing the mentor who brought her into the firm, while Harvey confronts what Donna means to him. After Samantha describes the person she wants to share both wins and losses with, Harvey realizes Donna fills that place for him. He goes to her apartment, and they kiss, beginning the relationship the two had long avoided. Robert’s departure leaves the remaining partners to manage the consequences of his confession.
