Season 9 finds the firm under the supervision of special master Faye Richardson, whose effort to curb its rule-bending puts her at odds with Harvey, Louis, Samantha, Alex, and Donna. Mike returns from Seattle to represent a basketball player seeking to escape an ethically troubling shoe contract held by Harvey’s client. Samantha joins Harvey on the opposing side, but after Mike outmaneuvers them she fabricates evidence. Faye discovers the misconduct and fires Samantha, setting her former colleagues against Faye.
Harvey and Sean Cahill are arrested over their role in Mike’s early release, but Alex exposes fabricated evidence by prosecutor Andrew Malik and frees them. Harvey’s mother then dies, and Mike returns for the funeral and the fight against Faye. Mike and Samantha bring a wrongful-termination suit against her. Harvey and Louis represent Faye under a dangerous bargain: if they win, she will leave; if they lose or reveal the deal, she will recommend that the bar disband the firm. When Harvey considers perjuring himself to protect his colleagues, Mike proposes one last con instead.
The partners trick Faye into signing a document that appears to record her ordering Harvey to tamper with a witness; she agrees to leave the firm alone, while Harvey privately agrees to leave as well. Louis and Sheila marry, but Sheila goes into labor during the ceremony and they leave for the hospital, where their daughter Lucy is born. At the reception, Harvey proposes to Donna and they marry in front of the guests. Harvey and Donna then announce they will join Mike and Rachel in Seattle, and the remaining partners add Katrina to the masthead, renaming the firm Litt Wheeler Williams Bennett.
