Kendall stops speaking to his family after Logan fires him and sues the company. Tabloids report that the recovering addict has relapsed, although the claims are false at this point. Logan invites the family to Connor’s New Mexico ranch for a therapy weekend, partly to repair his public image. The first session stalls. Shiv leaves to meet Senator Gil Eavis after Nate encourages her to consider working on the presidential campaign. She and Nate have sex in her car, crossing a line while both are engaged to other people. The therapist is hospitalized after diving into a shallow pool, ending another attempt at resolving the family’s problems.
Kendall arrives in New Mexico, but instead of joining the family, he goes off with local people and takes cocaine and methamphetamine. Roman finds him and brings him back. At the ranch, Logan insults Tom and berates Shiv for meeting Gil, making her leave in tears. Logan tells the family that he planted the earlier stories about Kendall’s drug use before Kendall actually relapsed. Kendall challenges the way Logan describes his childhood abuse at the hands of his uncle. The argument nearly turns physical. The next morning, Logan swims alone, and severe scars are visible across his back. The children depart after the failed sessions, while Connor hopes that Willa will come to love him.
