Season synopsis

Deep in debt and estranged from his daughter, Seong Gi-hun accepts a recruiter’s offer to join a secret contest with 455 other cash-strapped people. The first round, Red Light, Green Light, turns childhood play into a massacre, and the survivors learn that each death adds money to a prize they can claim only by outlasting everyone else. A vote briefly sends them home, but most return to the island because the hardships outside have not changed. Gi-hun reconnects with childhood friend Cho Sang-woo and forms a fragile group with Kang Sae-byeok, migrant worker Ali Abdul, and the elderly Oh Il-nam.
The rounds force the group to rely on nerve, deception, and one another: Gi-hun survives the dalgona challenge after Sang-woo leaves him to choose the difficult umbrella, then helps his team win tug-of-war with a strategy suggested by Il-nam. Marbles split partners against each other, and Sang-woo tricks Ali to survive. The glass bridge leaves just three finalists; a blast of flying glass badly wounds Sae-byeok. Sang-woo kills her in the dormitory before the final match.
Gi-hun and Sang-woo face each other in the Squid Game they played as boys. Gi-hun gains the advantage but offers to abandon the contest rather than kill his friend; Sang-woo instead stabs himself, leaving Gi-hun the unwilling winner. After the games, Gi-hun discovers his mother has died. Il-nam later reveals that he helped create the competition, then dies in hospital. Gi-hun gives Sae-byeok’s brother to Sang-woo’s mother and shares money with her, then turns away from a flight to visit his daughter after seeing the recruiter approach another candidate.
