Episode 4

Contains spoilers for this episode and earlier episodes.

Ruby is hurt by Otis's response to her declaration of love, and he delays the conversation she deserves. Eric tells him that kindness means admitting his feelings rather than pretending to have them. Moordale's new sex and relationship lessons create another confrontation: students are divided into restrictive groups and taught through shame and fear. Otis objects to the boys' lesson, while Maeve challenges the claims made to the girls. Both are sent out, giving them a brief chance to talk without the usual audience. Viv suggests a forum where students could discuss their concerns, but Hope prefers to use her to enforce obedience.

Maeve receives financial help that allows her to join the school trip and spends time with Isaac as their relationship becomes closer. Jean and Jakob continue therapy, disagreeing about what it can achieve and how they should approach their new family. Otis finally tells Ruby that he cannot say he loves her when he does not feel it. She asks him to leave, ending their relationship. Jakob offers Otis reassurance that honesty was the kinder choice even though it caused pain. Adam apologizes to Eric for his jealousy and says that he loves him; Eric returns the feeling. The students prepare to leave for France, with Otis newly single and several arguments at school and home still unresolved.
