Moordale begins another school year under the unwanted attention of its reputation as a sex school. New headteacher Hope Haddon presents herself as an approachable former pupil who will restore order, then questions Otis and Maeve about their old clinic. They have not spoken over the summer, and neither understands the silence in the same way. Otis believes Maeve ignored his confession, while she never received it. He is also secretly seeing Ruby, whose insistence on keeping their relationship hidden begins to frustrate him. Eric and Adam are now together, but Adam still struggles to express himself without retreating into anger.
The abandoned toilets remain a source of dubious advice after Kyle appoints himself the school's new expert. Otis initially wants nothing to do with helping students, although he and Maeve still respond when a classmate needs reassurance. At home, Jean finally tells Jakob about her pregnancy and invites him to a scan, making him decide how involved he wants to be. Maeve tries to contact Erin and receives a rejection instead of a conversation. When rumors about Ruby and Otis spread, Ruby agrees to see him openly and kisses him in front of the students. Otis tells Hope about the activity in the old toilets. Their demolition leaves Maeve facing the physical end of the clinic they built together.
