Season 5

Season synopsis

Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.

Miranda returns to work while learning how much of her day now belongs to Brady: breastfeeding, interrupted sleep and the demands of her law career leave her feeling she is failing at both jobs. Steve remains part of their parenting, and the season gradually brings them back into each other's orbit. At the Hamptons wedding weekend, Steve arrives at Miranda’s home and they sleep together, leaving her uncertain whether their old relationship is returning or whether they have made co-parenting harder. Samantha gives Richard another chance after his infidelity, but a trip to Atlantic City leaves her constantly watching for signs of cheating. Unable to trust him, she ends the relationship.

Carrie is single and finds New York unexpectedly lonely, so she accepts a publisher's offer to turn her newspaper columns into a book. She argues with Samantha over the book's revealing cover, then lets her friend handle publicity and the launch. While preparing for the book party, Carrie meets fellow writer Jack Berger at her publisher’s office; they click, but he declines her invitation because his girlfriend's parents are staying with him. Later, Carrie and Samantha travel by train to San Francisco for the book tour. Carrie sees Big there, and they sleep together after he says he regrets the hurt he caused; they do not restart as a couple. Charlotte, after her divorce from Trey, begins seeing her divorce lawyer Harry; his blunt manners put her off at first, but their sex and growing affection surprise her.
