Carrie and Aidan try again after meeting at Steve’s bar, but Aidan still distrusts her over Big. He proposes after Carrie's apartment becomes a co-op, and she says yes, but moving in together exposes how she protects her space and keeps the engagement ring off her finger. When wedding preparations make the commitment feel real, she admits she is not ready; Aidan says he still does not trust her after the affair, and leaves. Carrie turns to friends to help buy the co-op.
Charlotte and Trey separate after their marriage and attempts to have a child collapse under the pressure of infertility and Bunny's interference. Charlotte works as a docent at the Museum of Modern Art and cautiously considers dating, but the prospect of rebuilding a life after the marriage remains painful. Miranda's unexpected pregnancy follows a one-night reunion with Steve. Although she initially considers abortion and struggles to feel excited about becoming a mother, she continues the pregnancy; Steve helps her prepare for the baby, and she asks Carrie to be present at the birth. Miranda gives birth to a son, Brady, with Steve beside her.
Samantha begins a relationship with Richard and tries to tell herself that their initially casual arrangement is enough. Her feelings shift when she tells him she loves him and he says nothing back. Richard at first refuses monogamy; later, after a birthday threesome with Samantha and Alexa, he asks to make their relationship exclusive. Samantha accepts, then catches him cheating with a brunette at season's end and leaves him. Meanwhile, Big leaves New York for Napa; Carrie finds his empty apartment, with a record and a round-trip ticket he left in case either of them feels lonely.
