Picking up after the lodge fire, Aria, Spencer, Hanna and Emily search for Alison and face the murder of Detective Wilden. Ashley Marin is arrested after being seen with him, so Hanna works to help her mother as the investigation moves through Rosewood. The girls track Red Coat sightings and clues toward Ravenswood, where Emily is trapped in a box at a sawmill before a Red Coat saves her. Mrs. Grunwald tells them Alison is alive, and Alison later meets them back in Rosewood but says she cannot return while the danger around her remains.
Spencer becomes dependent on amphetamines while helping Toby investigate his mother’s death and keeping him clear of “A”’s schemes. Emily’s shoulder injury ends her swimming plans and complicates her future, while Hanna manages her mother’s legal trouble and begins investigating the clues herself. Aria tries to move on with Jake, but her feelings for Ezra return. A hidden apartment filled with surveillance and Alison material makes Ezra look like “A”; the reveal is that he has been researching Alison’s disappearance for a book and already knew Alison when he began his relationship with Aria.
The girls use a message left in Alison’s old room to contact her and meet in New York. Alison recounts the night she vanished: after a blow to the head, her mother found her and buried her while believing her dead; Alison was still alive, and Mona later picked her up and took her to a motel. Ezra arrives as a masked attacker threatens the group and is shot during the struggle, leaving his condition unresolved. A final Rosewood scene shows Jessica DiLaurentis’s body being dragged and buried by an unseen figure; “A”’s identity remains unsettled.
