Pretty Little Liars

Season 3

Season synopsis

Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.

Five months after Mona’s unmasking, the four Liars begin senior year under messages from a new “A.” Alison’s grave is disturbed, Jenna reveals that she regained her sight earlier than she admitted, and the girls try to work out who has taken over Mona’s game. Emily grieves Maya and later learns that Maya’s supposed cousin Nate is actually Lyndon James, her stalker; when he threatens Paige, Emily stabs him with his own knife while escaping.

Mona remains at Radley, but Hanna visits her and the others discover she may know more than she admits. Toby’s behavior becomes harder for Spencer to explain, and he is revealed to be working with Mona’s “A” team. After Mona fakes Toby’s death, Spencer breaks down and is admitted to Radley. There, Mona offers her a place on the team; Spencer accepts because she wants answers and believes Toby is gone. The apparent allegiance is real enough to put Spencer against her friends, but it is a move to get close to the people behind the messages, not a permanent betrayal.

Toby is alive: he joined the team to protect Spencer and works with her from inside it. The two reunite and try to identify Red Coat, while Spencer’s friends uncover that she has been hiding information from them. At the season’s party at the lodge, the Liars corner Mona as Toby and Spencer follow Red Coat; someone locks the friends inside and sets the building on fire. Red Coat pulls the unconscious girls to safety, and Hanna briefly recognizes the rescuer as Alison. The season ends with the group alive but still without a clear answer about who is directing “A” or why Alison is appearing.
