Ruby is taken to hospital with tuberculosis while Tommy searches for an explanation beyond the doctors' treatment. He leaves Ada to manage the business and travels to find Esme, believing that the family's past may explain his daughter's illness. Lizzie remains with Ruby as Tommy's effort to save her leads him away from the hospital at the moment she needs both parents near her.

Ada meets the people involved in Tommy's political dealings, answering Mosley, Diana, Gina and Jack Nelson without accepting their attempts to belittle her. In Liverpool, Arthur goes to confront Hayden Stagg over stolen opium. Stagg recognises Arthur's struggle with addiction and speaks to him about recovery rather than responding to the threat with fear. Arthur listens and leaves without the beating that the visit appeared ready to deliver.

Esme takes Tommy to a grave and links the sapphire he once gave away to the death of another young girl. She suggests that the bereaved mother may have cursed Ruby. Tommy offers money, a monument and gold, insisting that he can make amends and buy his daughter's recovery. When he reaches the hospital, Lizzie tells him Ruby has died. She had asked for him, and Lizzie gave her his goodbye kiss in his absence. His bargaining has not brought him back in time.
