The family gathers for Ruby's funeral, and Tommy responds to the loss by seeking revenge at the Barwell camp. He attacks people he holds responsible for the curse, adding more bloodshed to a death he could not prevent. Lizzie is disgusted by his response. Their shared grief does not draw them together when Tommy treats another killing as the answer to what has happened to their daughter.
Esme introduces another consequence of Tommy's earlier life: Duke, a son he has not known. Tommy also returns to the negotiations involving Nelson, Mosley, Diana and the IRA, performing allegiance to people he intends to undermine. Gina's relationship with Mosley gives him leverage to demand information from her. The work requires him to endure their claims and rituals while concealing the purposes that keep him at their table.
Dr Holford finally gets Tommy to listen to the results of his examination. He says Tommy has an inoperable tuberculoma and may have only a year to eighteen months before losing the ability to manage alone. Tommy presses for a number rather than comfort, then hides the conversation from Lizzie by presenting the doctor as his accountant. He treats the diagnosis as a new deadline and asks Polly's memory for enough time to finish what he intends to do.
