Heathens

Contains spoilers for this episode and earlier episodes.

John's death forces the Shelbys to gather while Michael recovers from his wounds. Esme blames the family business and takes her children away. At John's funeral, Tommy recalls a moment in France when the men believed they would die and treated every day afterwards as extra time. Arthur's grief becomes anger, while Polly returns reluctantly because Michael asks her to help the family survive.

Tommy hires Aberama Gold and his men to strengthen the defence against Luca's killers. Their usefulness comes with demands and a capacity for violence that unsettles Charlie Strong. The company also faces Jessie Eden's strike, while Ada is questioned over her political connections. Returning to Small Heath brings the Shelbys within familiar streets, but it does not remove the pressures created by either the vendetta or their business.

Luca walks into Tommy's office and reveals how easily his accomplice has emptied Tommy's gun. He names the family members he intends to kill and says Tommy will be last, so he can suffer the loss of everyone else. They agree that the vendetta will exclude children, civilians and police. Afterwards, Tommy and Arthur speak about John and Grace as people who are simply gone. Tommy fires his gun in private, unable to reverse either death.
