Monk

Season 5

Season synopsis

Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.

Natalie pushes Monk toward independence by renting him an office and setting him up as a private investigator. His first assignment seems small: find the driver who damaged a car at the marina. It opens into a murder case and establishes a new professional rhythm, with Natalie still steering the business while Monk resists the idea that he needs a new career. At Berkeley, their reunion visit brings Monk back among former classmates; the murder of a retired clinic nurse turns his attention to Dianne Brooks, whose husband Kyle is arranging a plot against her.

Other cases keep pulling the people around Monk into the work. Julie and her basketball teammates ask him to investigate their coach’s suspicious death, and Monk must solve a fire-station murder after an attacker blinds him. When Dr. Kroger considers retiring after his cleaning woman is killed, Monk refuses to accept that a patient is responsible and works to bring the psychiatrist back. Later, Monk joins his long-absent father on a delivery route and recognizes that the trucker’s strange detours are part of a larger mystery. In the season’s final case, a persistent bloody nose sends Monk to the emergency room. He discovers that the doctor he sought for a second opinion is dead, joins the murder investigation, and soon finds himself in danger too.
