Season synopsis
Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.
With Natalie established as his assistant, Monk takes on cases that put him in unfamiliar roles: he tries to expose a rival private investigator, investigates while recovering from the flu, and goes undercover at a stock analyst’s office. The cases also bring him back into contact with his brother Ambrose and the brothers’ absent father becomes a source of tension. Natalie and her daughter Julie remain part of Monk’s daily orbit, including when Natalie brings him into her family’s wedding and their relationship with her parents is strained.
The season’s most personal case begins when Natalie sees a woman who looks exactly like Trudy and hears her claim that she faked her death. The investigation confronts Monk with the possibility that his wife survived, but the woman is a lookalike impersonating Trudy. His wife’s death has not been undone. Elsewhere, Stottlemeyer’s marriage deteriorates as he suspects Karen is seeing another officer; Monk helps him investigate while trying to keep the captain from turning his anger on the wrong suspect.
Monk continues to be pulled between careful investigation and the emotional lives of the people around him. In the final case, he cannot avoid jury duty during a robbery trial while Stottlemeyer and Disher hold a fugitive wanted on federal drug charges for transfer to federal custody. Monk notices a woman’s body hidden in a courthouse dumpster and connects it to the trial and the fugitive’s handover. He and Natalie discover that Pat, another juror, is Escobar’s girlfriend and means to help him escape through a garbage chute; Monk alerts Stottlemeyer, and police arrest the pair.
