Season synopsis
Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.
Haley spends much of the season trying to move into fashion work. She prepares for an assistant interview with designer Gavin Sinclair, and Andy helps her practise; Claire mistakes their time together for romance. After Haley challenges Gavin, he fires her, but Gloria persuades him to give Haley her job back. That work deepens Haley and Andy’s closeness, while Beth remains in the picture as Andy’s girlfriend.
Alex’s senior year keeps her plans for college in the foreground. She is named co-valedictorian, then her siblings take her on senior ditch day; an unexpected stop at the old theatre Phil built turns the outing into a fight between Alex and Haley about the distance growing between them. Claire, meanwhile, gets an offer from a hotel chain and tries to read Jay’s mixed signals about whether she should leave the closet company they run together. His uncertainty makes the decision personal as well as professional.
At Alex’s graduation party, Phil is stranded in Seattle and Andy helps him join the family through a remote-controlled Skype device. Mitchell has been laid off but has not told Cam. Andy asks Phil’s robot for advice about proposing to Beth, and Phil’s laundromat story persuades him to propose. As Haley and Andy share a long goodbye embrace, Phil realizes they are in love, but the robot’s audio fails before he can warn them. Andy leaves still set on proposing to Beth, while Haley lets him go believing that is what he wants.
