Season synopsis
Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.
Mitchell and Cameron start the season trying to surprise each other with marriage proposals, then discover they have both planned one. After they become engaged, the wedding brings their extended family into the preparations, including Lily as their flower girl. Around that central plan, Cam tries playing George Washington to teach Alex’s A.P. history class, while Jay and Manny cause confusion at the courthouse when others mistake them for a couple seeking a marriage license. At the school fair, Jay’s guest-cop assignment also puts him at odds with his partner.
Haley’s life shifts as she spends more time around Andy, the family’s new manny. Phil ropes him into making an anniversary gift for his long-distance girlfriend Beth, bringing Haley into the effort and making the two young adults notice one another. The finale makes the mismatch plain: Alex realizes Haley has feelings for Andy, but Haley tells him he deserves better without admitting what she wants. Andy calls her from a cab to ask whether she means he deserves her; Haley says she only meant he should be happy with whomever he chooses, and the cab pulls away before she realizes he was outside.
On the wedding day, a wildfire forces the guests to leave the original venue, and the replacement falls through after another couple arrives with a reservation. The ceremony moves to Mitchell and Cameron’s home, but the pair are ready to call off the day. Jay steps in with a golf-club venue, and Phil officiates after Sal goes into labour and leaves them without their planned officiant. Jay walks Mitchell down the aisle; Cameron’s parents accompany him, and the two men marry with their family around them.
