Season 7 opens with Phil finally telling Haley that Andy has feelings for her, but Andy is already at the beach to propose to Beth. Haley and Claire reach him too late, and Beth accepts. Haley spends the summer with Dylan, while Andy’s return keeps the question between them alive. Their attempts to talk turn into arguments, then into another private encounter at Phil’s client’s high-tech house, where they stop pretending the attraction is only the house’s fault.
The relationship remains tangled while Andy is engaged to Beth. Haley tries to end their affair because she does not want to keep seeing someone who is promised to another person, but she and Andy return to each other. At Christmas, their affair is discovered. Andy learns Beth has also been unfaithful and ends their engagement, allowing him and Haley to date openly. Around them, Claire takes charge of Jay’s closet company, while Jay tries to find his place after stepping away from work. Cam’s summer coaching job in Kansas City also forces him, Mitchell and Lily to decide how they will handle time apart.
By the finale, the family is distracted by Alex’s return from college, Luke’s first heartbreak and Claire’s struggle to fire an employee. Haley discovers that Andy is considering a job in Utah and has held back because of her. She does not ask him to give up the opportunity; they part at the airport after she tells him he was the first man she loved. Cam and Mitch disagree over how to share time with Lily during his Kansas City coaching job, while the Dunphys make their own family-camp plans at home.
