Four newcomers arrive from the freighter, but their equipment and behavior undermine the promise of rescue. Jack and Kate help Daniel Faraday locate Miles Straume, who demands to examine Naomi’s body. Her farewell about a sister was a distress code, and Miles initially suspects the survivors killed her. After kneeling beside her body, he accepts Kate’s account that Locke was responsible. Sayid and Juliet then help Jack disarm the two arrivals.
Locke’s group finds Charlotte Lewis and takes her along despite her wish to remain where her team can locate her. Ben shoots her, but her bulletproof vest saves her life. Elsewhere, pilot Frank Lapidus fires a flare and leads Jack’s party to the helicopter he successfully landed. Frank realizes Juliet was not aboard Oceanic 815. Miles responds by demanding the location of Ben, revealing that finding him is their mission.
Flashbacks introduce the recruits before their journey. Daniel cries at news of the submerged wreckage of Oceanic 815 without knowing why. Miles apparently communicates with a dead young man and finds hidden money. Charlotte discovers a Dharma-marked polar bear collar in Tunisia, while Frank challenges the identification of the dead pilot shown on television. Naomi questions Matthew Abaddon’s choice of team. On the island, Ben prevents Locke from killing him by naming Charlotte and explaining that he has a man aboard their ship.
