Charlie’s death turns the prospect of rescue into an argument over whom the survivors can trust. Desmond returns from the Looking Glass with Charlie’s warning that the freighter is not Penny’s boat. Hurley breaks the news to Claire when the groups reunite at the plane’s cockpit. Earlier, separated from his companions in the jungle, Hurley finds a cabin, sees figures inside and flees when it appears again in his path.
Kate follows the wounded Naomi after stealing the satellite phone from Jack. Naomi attacks her, but Kate explains that Locke acted alone. Before dying, Naomi tells the freighter that her injury was an accident and asks that her love be passed to her sister. At the cockpit, Jack attacks Locke and pulls the trigger of his gun, discovering it is unloaded. The survivors divide: Hurley, Sawyer and Claire follow Locke toward the Barracks, while Jack’s group continues seeking rescue.
Flashforwards follow Hurley after his escape, when he is known as one of the Oceanic Six. Seeing Charlie sends him into a police chase, after which he returns to Santa Rosa. A visitor claiming to represent Oceanic asks whether others are still alive. Charlie appears again, saying Hurley is needed. Hurley later tells Jack they should return to the island, but Jack refuses. Back on the island, Jack and Kate meet a newly arrived Daniel Faraday.
